I just bought my first MiniDV camcorder. When I transfer the content of the MiniDV tape to my computer, I found the resolution is fairly small. Even the microsoft movie maker told me that the resolution of my AVI file is 720*480, however, when I played the file with Mediaplayer, the resolution is 360*240(close to that). Could anyone tell me why?

Is that possible to create a avi file as clear as a DVD movie by using MiniDV? My camcorder's video resolution is 0.38M why I can not get a 720*480 avi file from my MiniDV tape?

How did you transfer the video from camcorder to computer? Using firewire? And what software did you use for capturing the footage? Also, if you're running Win2000 or XP, you can check the video resolution of any avi files by looking in the properties of the file in Windows Explorer.

Captured avi file has the same picture quality as original MiniDV footage coz there's no conversion/compression done (ie. no info is lost) during the capture. Furthermore, avi files are usually in sort of uncompressed format (actually MiniDV format is compressed too but not as much as that of DVD/MPEG2 format) which has a better quality than DVD which is in MPEG2 compressed format. So your camcorder should be able to record videos that are superior than DVD's.

Thanks for the reply.

I am using firewire and I tried both the microsoft movie maker and Ulead video capture 7.0.

My problem is: WinXp told me that the avi file's resolution is 720X480, however, when I double click the file and play it, the video window is very small (360X240). I don't know the reason.

Since the video window is small, when I played it in full screen, the quality is much worse than the DVD movies I bought.

The problem seems to be in MediaPlayer. Try the latest WMP or other viewers to see if it works.

Try to play the video file you've captured in a different media player. I actually find that Windows Media Player 6.4 (that comes as part of Windows 2000) is one of the best, don't know how easily you can install it into Windows XP though, as it comes with a higher version. Which windows OS are you running?
