Nvidia Vs ATI?

Any current thoughts as early reports show ATI 9800 Pro and Nvidia 5900 Ultra benching roughly equal?

Should I interpret the incremental cost of 5900 unjustified? Or instead, will it take a bit for Nvidia to get the drivers right? Shouldn't the drivers ALREADY be right because of time spent with 5800?

Curious as to others opinions.

I smell flame war. Here's my opinion about the 2 top-end cards for the 2 companies. True the 5900Ultra is the faster of the 2 cards, but however if you carefully examine at the architecture of the 2 cards. Radeon 9800pro is much better designed, and I believe because ATI is pretty bad at making drivers, they have not yet pushed this card to its full potential, they could push it further. If I was really rich of course I'll probably get the 5900 Ultra since it's currently got the better performance. This is just my opinion, Please don't start another flame war of ATI vs Nvidia.

I hate Computers! I could only overclock my Barton 2500+ to 2580mhz(vcore 1.65). My Radeon 9700pro core/mem speed won't go above 410/720. I really hate computers!

- To GW - Yeah, and if you see 2 identical 5900s and one is $500 and the other is $550, get the $550. It's probably better.

As for you scott, the 5900 is clocked faster (if that was the "faster" you meant), but is no faster (framerate-wise) than the 9800 Pro. And neither ATi nor nVidia are bad at making drivers. Don't state facts that aren't true or you WILL start a flame war, albeit unintentionally.

Tit for tat, butter for fat, ATi's dog kicks nVidia's cat

Well I had trouble with the driver versions Catalyst 3.0 and 3.4, both of them messed up my 9700pro's performance. Same with a lot of my friends they all had trouble with ATI's drivers.

I don't intend to flame... however...

What are you talking about?

ATI has three times as many people on their driver staff than nVidia and ATI also has new drivers out every four weeks.

In my opinion...ATI wins hands down in terms of image quality. If you haven't seen them side by side then you need to.

IMO this IQ issue is being blown way out of proportion. Yes, ATi's AA, and resulting IQ is better than nVidia's. However, in most actual game screenshots I have seen, the difference is very small. The only screenshot I saw where the difference was large was in [H]ardOCP's review, where the lines were almost horozontal and were not AA'ed well on the 5900. And the 4XS AA does in fact look good on the nVidia cards, but I don't know how well it performs.

So many people are saying "worlds of difference" and "hands down" IQ differences. Yet most screenshots I have seen show that the ATi IQ is only slightly better.

GW, Trolling for 'irregulars'. Hmm got one!

BTW, Bum_JC, what does the number of people WORKING on the drivers and the number/frequency of releases have to do with them necessarily being good. One would hope it would help, but it's not a guarantee.

And I have to comment on the original idea of the thread. Both ATI and Nvidia are equal in performance and in their CHEATING; so the obvious choice is MATROX, especially with the recent announcement of a 512mb Parhelia, that's GOTTA be the Bad-boy of Graphics, everyone knows 512mb beats 256mb, c'mon it's as simple as MATH!

disagree

my 8500LEs IQ *out of the box* was VERY HANDS DOWN better.
after messing around alot i finally got my TI4200 up to acceptable image quality.

8X Ansio on my Ti4200 = 4x Ansio on the 8500LE
i get a subtantial performance loss from using 8xAF on my TI4200 , NONE except for 16 AF on my 8500LE

after messing around with both cards, i find my TI4200 to be overall worse looking BUT remember i did things most normal users wouldnt know how to do to get it there. but it is indeed faster

I guess I am out of touch with the forums. Two and a half weeks can do that to a person.

BTW, Bum_JC, what does the number of people WORKING on the drivers and the number/frequency of releases have to do with them necessarily being good. One would hope it would help, but it's not a guarantee.
True. However when you personally know the people that build them you will tend to side with them. Call me biased towards ATI by a hair. I have both kinds of cards in my machines. (Even a Matrox PCI card)

Sad to say I had to decommision my Voodoo2. :frown:

Most of the ATI "driver" issues are power supply and chassis grounding issues. The "blocky" textures people speak of are often a poor chassis ground to the supply. A friend and I created the problem simply by loosening the MB screws and tapping the case. texture blocks appear, and go away, with each tap. The artifacts stay away after the ground is firmly established.

These newer 8 pipeline card eats 70 to 80 watts of power and half the users have no name supplies that have high internal resistance when they warm up which eats the supply power to 1/3 the "rated" power, or even less on Atholon systems (run hotter).

Both problems were in recent problems with ATI and Nvisia cards. So, I guess they both are no good? Seriuosly, I had the Nvidia 4800 owner replaced the bad supply (worked with the 4200 just fine)with an ANTEC 400 watt supply and my other aquaintence fixed the ground issue and his problem went away with his 9500 ATI part. Both are happy with either card.

Very Interesting Indeed. Although I dont have this problem I can quite easily imagine someone using a 180 watt MicroATX PSU after upgrading to a R9800 Pro and then expecting it to miraculously work.

Well that's the main problem, nothing is clear with nVidia these days. And most reviews i read, the R9800 is faster in most of the benchmarks at high detail \ resolution (even here at tom's that is)

Heh...

Well, Nvidiots can go buy their FX5900 Ultra and be happy, and Atidiots can go buy their R9800 Pro and be happy too. The differences between the cards are negligible, so who cares? (apart from dumb fanboys).

I CARE!

Buy the upcoming Matrox Parhelia 512mb! It's got more megs it's Better! 2X better!

Ati and Nvidia SUK Matrox Rulz!

Heh - I would buy a parhelia if they weren't so damn expensive; dual DVI outputs are nice (mind you, ASUS have dual DVI on most of their FX based cards now)

Hey, I'd definitely buy one for my 'video rig' (3 monitors Mmmm) if it weren't for the price. I love their stuff, but it's just not worth swaping out the R9000.
