Need opinions on Upgrade to 128MB ATI Radeon 9800

- Yes it's good
- OK I realise that
- It's MUCH MUCH better than the GF4s in alost every application, except maybe Quake3 at 1024x768, and then the few FPS diff. between 300FPS and 308FPS won't be noticeable to your monitor/eyes. Remember that the GF4 isn't DX9 compliant so you won't see as many 'effects' a on the R9800. And the picture quality should be much better even in 2D mode on the R9800.

The main thing will be the price. Is it low enough to make it make more sens than a 9700Po (which likely performs better or equally)? Or a 9700Non-pro (which would likely perform ALMOST as well as the 9800non-pro).

Just be sure it's not a 9800SE with 128bit memory (although I haven't heard any REAL news of them being availible anywhere on the planet yet) as they would suck.

The Radeon 9800 should be a good choice as long as you aren't paying much more than the 9700Pro an 9700Non-pro.

Grape, wouldn't you see MORE effects on the 9800 because of its DX9 compliancy? I'll just assume it's a typo. Anyway, it will eat a ti4800 alive, throw it up, and eat it again. It's a good deal. I've seen it priced at $280, but I forget where.

There are only a few cards that qualify as compition for the 9800 pro/np. The 9700 Pro (nice slightly slower alternative), the 5800 ultra (nice alternative for a deaf person), the 5900 ultra (a touch faster), and the 5900 (which is about on par), and of course the 9800 pro version.

Anything else is going to be slower. Mind most 4800's you see are actually 4800SE, which is a 4200 with 8X agp. The true 4800 is a 4600 with 8X agp... shrug.

YES it's a TYPO (mentioned that it happens ALOT at work in another thread), it's missing an 'S' in there. DANG!

The sentence should read:

Remember that the GF4 isn't DX9 compliant so you won't see as many 'effects' AS on the R9800.

Sorry for the confusion, although I think the rest of the post explains it fairly well, and the beginning is correct, NO DX9 on GF4. Sounds like a Slogan, NO more SIS in 2004! NO more SIS in 2004! Sounds good, No?!?

SHADUS, what about an R9700non-pro? You missed one IMO. Just one though.
