9600Pro: Enough for HalfLife2??

Last response: in Graphics & Displays

Realistically, will it be powerful enough to run HalfLife2 smoothly? I like playing games with as high of settings as I can and still achieve a playable framerate. I realize that there is no truly accurate way to judge this now, but some speculation would be nice.

These days, no matter what company you like, be it <b>nVidia, ATi, or whatever,</b> no matter how logical your reasons, you're labeled an <b>idiot</b> or a <b>fanboy</b>, or <b>both.</b>

Depends on what native resolution you want to run at. I wouldn't expect it to run smooth above 1280x1024 with anything turned up. 1024x768 should run well with GOOD 4XAA/8XAF. But we wont' know for sure until some review site publishes their trials with it. I'm looking forward to that review too. Or I'll let you know after I buy my copy. :wink:

Here's to hoping. However if this is to decide whether or not to buy a card, wait, Wait, WAIT ! What!?! At least until it comes out and you can be sure. I NEEDED a new GFX card, if you don't then wait 'til you can be sure.

well if u wanna play half life 2 u hve no choice but ATI

nvidia cards cant run it cus of dx 9 problems
July 19, 2003 2:13:46 AM

dude you are confused here, the dx9 issue is a FSAA bug

Athlon 1700+, Epox 8RDA (NForce2), Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 80GB 8MB cache, 2x256mb Crucial PC2100 in Dual DDR, Geforce 3, Audigy, Z560s, MX500
July 19, 2003 3:12:20 AM

how am i confused

the dx9 bug as u call it is fixable in ATI cards but not nvdia cards..
July 19, 2003 3:34:10 AM

The Nvidia cards can still all play HL2, they just have a bug in them that affected all DX9 cards that can't be fixed. (supposedly)
But it only affects image quality of FSAA

Athlon 1700+, Epox 8RDA (NForce2), Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 80GB 8MB cache, 2x256mb Crucial PC2100 in Dual DDR, Geforce 3, Audigy, Z560s, MX500

Kinney, read the story MORE closely. The issue CAN be fixed on ATI cards but supposedly there is no workaround (yet) for the NVs. Yees it's only AA, but it's still a NEGATIVE issue, not a good selling point.

Here's the exact text:

<i>The developers of the legendary Half-Life game said that drivers are not likely to solve the problem, however, it still can be solved for graphics cards based on VPUs from ATI Technologies, such as RADEON 9500-, 9600-, 9700- and 9800-series. As for NVIDIA GeForce and GeForce FX-series, there are practically no chances to find a workaround, according to Valve.</i>

Of course it may be fixed in DX9.1 like they say.

And all the more reason <b>Daddywags</b> to wait for the R420. HeHe, it'll kill even that R9800Pro. :wink: So maybe you SHOULD get an R9600Pro to last until you can get your hands on an R420 with PS 3.0++++++++++EXTRA. :cool:

Now for some unnecessary faces :smile: :lol:  :evil:  :mad:  :eek:  :wink: :frown: :redface: :tongue: :eek:

It should run great using 1024x768 res with filterings. But also your CPU and RAM will also play a major role too. At least a 2gig cpu and pc2700 would be sweet.
July 19, 2003 7:33:36 PM

I'm not that dumb, kinney. I'm still buying the ATi, though, and I've explained my reasons many times.

And grape, I plan on buying whatever is the fastest when I go to make my purchase. I may have to wait awhile. My (lovely) parents bought a 2003 Honda Odyssey today, and they're my moneyline. If we don't get a computer until R420 arrives, that's what I'll get.

I didnt think you were dumb, I wanted to make sure thats not what you thought when you said it didnt work on NV.
The 9800 pro is a fine card for the price and probably the better deal over the 5900 pro at this moment on that I have to agree with you.

IMO none of the high ends cards are good deals, it probably take ATi and nVidia like $50 to make the card (guessing) and their selling it for $300-$500

DDW, That's the spirit. I'm stoked for the PCI-EX enabled cards :cool: , and if you can wait that long (although unfortunately it MAY be after the release of HL2, D]|[, DeusEx2, etc) then it's the best choice IMO. So I was thinnking stop-gap measure was what you were looking for. BTW I forget what are you running now? And don't forget our D]|[ requirements thread :wink: . You'll likely be able to play it on almost anything within the last 2 years that isn't integrated. Just don't expect shadows. :smile:

If you can find one a 9700non-pro may be a better deal. It's usually pretty cheap and is still a good card especially to tide one over until the PS 3.0 cards.

Yeah.

All of my current gaming is on my dad's office computer, when I get a chance to use it. Specs:

AMD AthlonXP 2500+

The only high end card I bought on release was the gf2 GTS and I didnt regret that (because of its longevity) but I think I wouldve majorly regretting buying the GF3 brand new.
I'm having trouble shelling out for the new NV as they seem quirky, first 5800 troubles, then this AA issue. I just want to give it some time.
The 5600 ultra w/flipchip seems to be the best midrange choice besides I cant find it anywhere.. I hope they keep the price at $200.

Quote:

Ok, and let's start with a FEW, I'll forget about listing your constant posting to out-of-date info, and chalk that up to ignorance (to which I'll also ascribe that last bit);

Now from <A HREF="http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/modules.php?nam..." target="_new">THIS</A> thread;
<i>
Nvidia always pulls 110% out of their hardware through drivers, and this is the first time that Nvidia has better hardware than ATI. </i>

Ok, let's see, ask anyone, especially EDEN, and they will tell you that the Theoretical performance of the NV cards is WAY above their ACTUAL performance. Whereas the ATIs are pretty much near their max. performance. So your first line other than just being hyperbole, it's plain BS. And then there's the END of that sentence. This is NOT the first time. Wow two loads of BS in one sentence. Shall I go on? Ok one more from the same paragraph;

<i>Usually its the other way around ,GF3 vs 8500 for example. The 8500 was faster at first and had superior hardware,</i>

Atually this is the EXACT opposite and the perception was that the GF3tis were far better than the R8500s which only improved with drivers (unlocking that better hardware? well maybe you got that right, but still the GF3ti didn't not come from behind, and are co-leaders depending on which GF3ti, which game, and whether AA/AF is used). Now that's just from ONE post in the thread I could catalogue ALL of your errors, but then again I don't know if it requires THAT much proof. I think most people here have already seen them and said 'what the heck is he talking/writing about!?!' Let's not mention your linking the features as being a selling point. Features that included the FX flow. You link to alot of OLD/irrelevent reviews details and then don't back up what you say. No better than a GOOGLE search.

If you need more just let me know. Considering the SMALL number of posts you have here, and the small contribution you've made; there's ALOT of BS there, especially in just ONE post.

And no I won't leave you or our posts alone as long as you continue to post crap. I'd rather focus on the group but people like yourself detract from the information availible in the group. So if I can get you to either start researching before you post or stop posting all together then fine. Otherwise each of your BS posts will likely be followed by one of mine refuting and discrediting you. If you post quality info then I'll also leave you alone because my problem isn't with you but your info.
So I won't <i>'get out of my online face.'</i> until that happens. And no I'm not the judge around here, that's everyone else watching/reading. Once again I ask, 'do you think you've made your point'? I know I have yet again.

<b>DDW</b>, Thanks for the vote of confidence. I'll have to forward that to my psychologist. :wink:

<i>they will tell you that the Theoretical performance of the NV cards is WAY above their ACTUAL performance. Whereas the ATIs are pretty much near their max. performance</i>
Whats that have to do with my quote? Nothing. I dont know if you forgot about the driver increases Nvidia has put out in the past that increased performance in some cases up to 20% in a single update.. my old GTS seemed like an entirely new card.
My point which you mistook, is to give NV more time, they will pull more performance out of the FX line, you probably won't see that for the r300 series. And if they are already at their theoretical max..

<i>this is the EXACT opposite and the perception was that the GF3tis were far better than the R8500s which only improved with drivers (unlocking that better hardware? well maybe you got that right, but still the GF3ti didn't not come from behind, and are co-leaders depending on which GF3ti, which game, and whether AA/AF is used</i>

GF3TI? Who said anything about the GF3TI? I said Geforce 3, in case you forgot there was a GF3 before the ti series. And for your uninformed self, its about between the GF3 ti200 and ti500 in performance.
And sorry but the 8500 was more advanced feature wise than the GF3s. The 8500 had PS1.4 while the GF3 was limited to 1.3. Though I dont use google searches, my info is all based off my memory and actual experience.
In fact the 8500 was released AFTER the GF3.

I benched Q3A against a friends 1800+ rig (I have the 1700+) who has a 8500 and my ol' GF3 beat it handily, a 10fps lead but regardless he had a faster processor.. of course there are other variables but I dont remember his mobo chipset ect. but we both had ddr 266, I was running a KT266A at the time.

Anyway, I might have been wrong about the 8500 being faster on launch date, like I said I go off of my memory and unlike yourself, I'm not perfect all the time.
I've made rather few untrue comments but thanks for scruntizing my every word.. I will stand behind most of it and anything that I messed up on I will admit too.

I doubt someone who is always right such as yourself could do the same.

<font color=blue><i>Whats that have to do with my quote?</i></font color=blue>

Everything;
Let's review the quote: <font color=green><i>Nvidia always pulls 110% out of their hardware through drivers...</i></font color=green>

Umm, it sounds like theoretical vs actually is EXACTLY related to how much they 'pull' out of their hardware.

<font color=blue><i>GF3TI? Who said anything about the GF3TI? I said Geforce 3, in case you forgot there was a GF3 before the ti series</i></font color=blue>

No I haven't forgotten, but as the GF3ti was closer in release date I naturally assumed (how naive of me :eek:  ) that you were talking about the true head-3-head performer. And even the GF3 itself was above the R8500 in most gaming tests at the start (which ATI complained were NV biased [the way it's meant to be played no even started yet]). And the PS1.3 vs 1.4 issue is irrelevant here because that shortcoming wasn't even fixed with the GF4tis (avoiding the idea of MX this time) only with the adoption of PS2.0 which includes 1.4 as a subset. So it's really irrelevant, or is the GF4 a lesser card than the R8500?

<font color=blue><i>In fact the 8500 was released AFTER the GF3.</i></font color=blue>

Yes and that was the point. Even looking at the GF3 NOW it all depends on what you TEST, just like I said. And the same applies for the GF3tis which were released JUST after the R8500. And using Q3 as a test on low settings is pointless as 165 v. 170 FPS means very little. Check the other tests.

<font color=blue><i>I doubt someone who is always right such as yourself could do the same.</i></font color=blue>

Hmm sarcasm eh, interesting. Well I do make mistakes (like PCI-X vs PCI-EX) but I don't misdirect the corrections and insult the person with the correct answer, like you do. And if I'm not sure then I put down IIRC, thereby letting people know, I'm not Ivory sure/pure.
I suggest YOU do the same.

Hmm that leaves 20% out in the open for grape to attempt to ostracize!!
Hes not that scary, just likes to argue over stupid sh*t, over, and over, and over... :wink:
and I'm too stubborn to let win but his arguments are losing their coherancy.

I'll reform you yet. Just let me sleep first and see if it's worth it.

That would tend to describe alot of your posts too, especially involving anything NV v. ATI related. So don't get too comfy with my changed disposition, it's not for YOUR benifit.

Ciaola!

I didn't mean someone to moderate posts and rid the place of flames Grape!!

I said a COUNSELOR to moderate GROUP SESSIONS!
Like to work out anger and relationship problems and such!

To moderate simply means to watch over, or direct (direct the direction of the session).

Ah, Ok, I thought you were joking (based on past experiences), that's why I put the laugh :lol:  at the end of my comment.
I didn't think you were suggestiong it (I know where you stand on them, pretty much the same as me from what I remember), I just thought you were giving a reminder of what happened to you and GW. Anywhooo, so be it.

BTW, that's why I mentioned the mediator, I thought that's what you were attempting to be, obviously not. But in any case...

I'm off to bed.

Mediator would also work:)  But I was not wrong in my usage of moderator. I mean, a group session with all of us could really get out of hand! And in that case a moderator might be a bit more help than a mediator!

Lol.

Will, way to step up and handle the situation. Job well done. Grape and Kinney, way to take it like men. Grape, DON'T KILL ANYONE at hockey tonight. hehehehe, I sound like a grandfather.

No dead, although a guy did break/sprain/bruised his shoulder/collar bone (I didn't do it! :wink: I don't know the end result he went off to the med. clinic and was still there when I left for work). He got checked pretty hard into the boards. Hope he's OK cause it's hard enough finding people in the summer (most students returned home) to play who are good enough.
Anywhooo, alls well that ends.... well just ends.

BTW we lost 15-11 (sounds like a football score but it's shinney). Best part of the game, afterwards with the FREE beer thanks to a guy who has a summer job with Big Rock breweries. :eek:
