missing notification icons

A number of the icons in my system tray have gone missing. According to
task manager they applications are running. I went to customize
notifications and noticed that many of them are shown with a folder
icon. Several of the apps have the wrong icon. I tried the reset default
button with no change. How can I restore the icons?
