I remember awhile back the Kyro2 created quite the buzz with GF2 GTS performance and an interesting architechure called tile based rendering.
Though I dont remember the details maybe some of you can update on what happened to this seemingly promising (yet supposedly difficult to get right) method?
It used 100% of its memory bandwidth and HyperZ (ATI) and the geforce 3s "lightspeed" memory architechure didnt deliver quite 100% like the kyro.
I was waiting for the Kyro3 but then the companies (ST Microelectronics?),I believe, went under or abandoned the project.
Anyone know what happened to their work? And why there isnt a tile based card on the market?
yah i believe all the video card manufacturers adopted some type of tile based z optimizations
dunno what happened to them. probably them not putting a T&L engine in their cards (which has more of an impact than tile based rendering, especially back when processors were less powerful.. i think the P3 600 was the BIG PROC back then) had a big impact on performance.........and sales
it would be nice to have a 3rd party in the video card market. especially nowadays
