I just put together a new comp: soyo dragon ultra kt400 mobo, athlon xp 2500, 512mg ram, and radeon 9600 pro 256mb video card. I've been able to install the catalyst 3.4 drivers, but 3.5, and 3.6 install, then when I'm rebooting it just hangs at a black screen instead of going to my sign on screen. This only happens with the 3.5, and 3.6 drivers. I even tried the omega drivers with no luck. And, I've tried uninstalling the drivers in safe mode, then installing regular, and also installing them manually. Anyone have any suggestions?

FIRST, did you download the latest AGP (Hyperion) drivers for your mobo? That's always the first step.

Is it a Gigacube? Just curious, cause there are few 256mb out here and if it is it's not really a pro, but that's sort of another issue.

HERE's a link to a very good instruction list for complete removal and addition of drivers. It's a sticky thread from Rage3D. Try those procedures.

Also if your card has any additional features specific to Gigacube (if that's what you have) it may (but unlikely) be causing some conflict. Did you check your card maker's website for their specific drivers?

I haven't had any issues installing the 3.4,3.5,3.6 or Omegas (done it a bunch of times) on my BBA card, except of course the missing SmartGart (not that I miss it too much), and trueform slider (which I kinda miss but I'll wait for the Omegas to see if it re-appears).

I usually just go to add/remove and remove the control panel, and display drivers (in that order), of course after having downloaded and unpacked (if needed) the replacemtns; to be sure you may want to uninstall everything card related (it's a one piece install now so why not?). Then I rebbot into low res. windows, and then I install the drivers, then the control panel (or not with the Omegas) in that order, although the new 3.6s are all in one package. It's worked pretty much flawlessly for me (except the first time when I forked up a win2K allocation error which I'd been avoiding up 'til I got th new card)

I checked to see what version of AGP controller I have and it says the driver date is 8/16/2001. So, I try installing the via 4in1 drivers again, and the date stays the same. Is it supposed to be that date or is it not installing properly?

So you loaded the Hyperion drivers? The lastest drivers should be 4.48. I'm not sure about that date it doesn't seem right.
Did you go HERE to get them?

As for Gigacube check THIS thread I created a while back and understand my 'issue' with the Giga 9600s. That's why I kinda KNEW it was them. HOWEVER, be sure to read the 'UPDATE' that's something new. So you may want to run RadClocker, or Rage3Dtweak and check the speeds, but I guess we'll have to wait until you can get this running correctly first.

Let me know how it goes.

Yeah, I installed the latested hyperion drivers, and it didn't update my AGP driver. so, I found the old agp driver as a standalone file on the via arena site, and installed that. Now I have a newer, yet not the most recent AGP driver. The date now says 7/14/2002. I tried installing the catalysts again, and it still does the same thing.

Strange dude! I would suggest getting in touch with the people at RAGE3D. Fotrunately for me, but unfortunately for you, I haven't had much trouble with the CATs. It does bother me about your AGP drivers though as they are older than the card itself, and pretty much older than even the first HINT of the R9600P. But I have no idea if that is it. You might also want to check with Via or Soyo.

It sounds like there may just be a conflict somewhere we cant figure out (although I think we can guess).

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Marketing.

Powercolor was seeling 9700Pros and 9800Pros that came set at lower stock speeds and often couldn't even 'overclock' up to REAL pro speeds.
See this [H]ard|Ocp article and be sure to check the Overclocking section where they mention 'shipped' clock rates.

In the end it's a 'Gigacube 9600Pro' or a 'Powercolor 9700PRo', it's not technicaly an ATI 9600/9700Pro, just 'powered by ATI'. Only Built By ATI cards are 'garanteed' to run at 'stock' speeds specified by ATI.

BTW good luck with VIA, although they may direct you to SOYO and vice-versa. You may want to check their knowledge base/FAq on their sites, this may be a common problem.
