A strange thing is happening. When I try to open a "system" window, it
will open and then close right away. For instance, if I type cmd in
the "run" space, the command window will open and then close right
away. When doing a windows update, I click on the little update icon
in the system tray and the update window opens and closes right away.

In addition, probably related, when I try to run Internet Explorer, the
same thing happens. Window opens, window closes. Nothing on the task
bar.

To repair all system files, go to Start/Run, and type (or paste in): SFC /SCANNOW
