Can Duress be misdirected back to the caster?

Target opponent reveals his or her hand. Choose a noncreature, nonland card
from it. That player discards that card.

And, since this has to target AN OPPONENT, and since a player can never be
their own opponent, this can't target the caster of the spell in any way,
regardless of whether you're trying to do so originally, or trying to do so
by picking a legal opponent to target and then change the target.
