i have been checkin out THG for a while now and there is one thing i am totally lost at. Everytime i look at the benchmarks i get kind of pissy. How the hell do you guys get your FPS so freakn high??!! I can match my system to whatever you are using for the benchmarks and i still cant get FPS over 80. What gives? What are you guys doin so different to get FPS from 80 to 170!!

Well, you can yell all you want, but it ain't helping if you don't provide your system specs dude.

We can't help ya if you don't help us help ya.

Try disabling V-sync in the Control Panel. That's likely it, as it maxes your FPS to the max of your monitor.

Just a thought.

Okay... that's step one. What games/benchmarks are you running? The 9000 Pro ain't the fastest card in the world...

definitely find a way to do this :) I'll almost go sofar as to put money on 80hz as your monitor refresh rate...

as a note, V-Sync limits the frame rate by forcing the game to wait until the next sync event occurs. You will get a better picture with V-Sync on, and given that 80fps is still plenty good enough... dont really see why people bother turning it off... but hey! leave y'all to it :)

I never heard of 80Hz. I know of 72,75 and 85.

no the 9000 pro isnt the fastest but it is what i have, and i believe it should be getting better fps than 40-60, or at least a steady fps. i play mainly sof2 and rtcw: et. and 3dmark2001se, which i got a score of 2247 (default bench), isnt that a little low?

maybe that latter part is your problem... Not exactly sure how/if fast-write plays a big part these days, but maybe if you sort that one out then you'll see a bit more of the performance you expected.

oh, and it may not be hardware... anti-virus, email, MSN, utilities - all that crap running in the background while benchmarking will guarantee you a low score.

Quote:

very low. my 700mhz+Ti4600 clocked in closer to 5000 in that benchmark.

hmm, granted it is a bit rare... but being a graphics programmer (specialising in Direct3D), I know from much past experience, if it hits a "ceiling" in the 60-85 region then its quite likely to be the V-Sync (no guarantee mind)

Granted, it could just be that its not capable of more than 80fps... but when it stops dead on a round-10 number it makes me think its hitting another limit.

The other thing is remember he is probably telling us the AVG. FPS and not the MAX. therefore it's likely MAX. at 85 or something and then it's avg. them to about 80fps.

Just a thought.

quite possible! but well, only 1 way we're gonna find that out...

But for lack of any other information, seems that the old v-syncing is probably to blame (partially if not totally).

Jack

While we can find possibilities, the 3dMark score in itself tells that there is something majorly wrong, and we should start from there, as often a good regular score shows that the card is performing as it should in games.

Fast Writes should always be disabled, so as SideBand. Updated drivers are a must.
While background apps can hinder the score, it's never THAT bad. 1024*768*32 is the standard res. Let's hope he uses that. Indeed turning off AV can help.
Making sure no app is writing to disk while benching is another thing.
Making sure AGP 4X is properly used and getting the most recent AGP drivers from the motherboard chipset (such as the VIA 4-in-1s) could be a helper.
It is very hard to find a cure for his problem, when his score is THIS bad. It simply falls beyond any logical explanation for a 9000PRO's performance.

agreed!

I'm just wondering if Anti-Aliasing is enabled... the 8500-9200 series chipset was never very fast when any form of FSAA was enabled. I can wipe off a few 1000 from my 3DMark scores by wacking up the FSAA, and when my drivers installed it was defaulted to 4x AA and 2x Anisotropy...

Jack
July 24, 2003 5:45:52 PM

Ah, the other explanation I forgot, ehehhe.
If AA is on, of course it justified it all. But if in normal operation he gets this score, it's a huge cause for concern.

i do not have any other apps running in the background...none, and my services are tweaked (win2k) for perf. i lowered all the options in display properties to high performance and disabled smoothvision and truform. vsync is off and anistropic is set at 2x. re-ran the benchmark and got 2253. a 3 point increase. now i know something isnt right....ive got fast write enable in bios but the settings for the card in windows dont like fast write and always disables it. also the video BIOS shadow / video ROM BIOS shadow are disabled in bios, cant boot if they are enabled...

ouch... you really do got something going wrong here.

disable fast-writes in the bios, increase the AGP aperture (2x the size of the RAM on-card, so 128mb in your case).

try grabbing the latest drivers off ATI.com, and also see about flashing the BIOS.

secondly, stick your mobo name into google and see if you can come up with any known issues (and hopefully known solutions).

Beyond that I'm a little stumped as to what you can do!

Jack
July 24, 2003 11:12:00 PM

Don't be a dumbass. A 9000 Pro is way better than an MX440.

Stick it back in and figure it out. Don't screw yourself out of a nicer card.

If anything I suggest formatting your hard drive, and reinstalling everything including the latest drivers (3.6s), latest bios for your mobo, latest chipset drivers.

And set AA and aniso to OFF (application preference).

I'd suggest you try and work out what was wrong with the 9000 card... the 440mx is a piece of [-peep-] for features.

I dunno bought raw performance, but definitely in the next few months you're really gonna appreciate having a programmable unit on your 3D card, which (afaik) the 'mx' cards dont have (just glorified GeForce 2's).

That makes sense to me, the 9000 is a real turd, like the GeForce2 MX200 used to be, only a bit better because it's based on better technolgy.

The MX440 is a freshened up GeForce2 GTS, which was a fairly good card.

Crashman whats wrong with you?

I have a friend with an MX440, and I have a friend with a 9000 Pro. The friend with the MX440 has an XP2000, 256 ddr266, and an MSI k7n2l (or whatever, its nforce 2).
The friend with the 9000 Pro has an XP1500, and a gigabyte KT266A board, and 256 ddr266.

The friend with the 9000 Pro has significantly better game performance, and can use anisotropic filtering without killing performance.

Oh, and someone should mention to him that nVidia drivers can wreak havoc with ATI drivers, so if he had an nVidia card installed previously, he should have used a utility to remove the driver before installing the ATI driver.

And that he should make sure AA and AF are turned off.

Assuming the 9000 PRO is behind the 8500, which was an excellent card and performer (Ti500 levels), the 9000PRO is pretty much a geForce 3 AND has PS1.4. I don't understand how can you even try to have such "crap" comments on them! The 440MX is a goner, behind the Ti200, sucks badly, no feature-set, nothing.
9000PRO has DX8 and has the R200 architecture but bastardized. Common sense my good Crash!

It takes 3 months only?
Man you guys are getting it way too freely...
Here it's study first, pass Theory exam, wait 12 months, practice, or 8 months if you take driving classes, then pass it, and get a Probatory permit, which allows you to drive alone but for 2 years, you are still limited at 4 Inaptitude Points.

They seriously should up your limits to 16 years minimum before starting, and 12 months practice time with a Temp Permit. Way too low IMO.

HEhe, since I'm SOOoooo much olde than you (not that much but basically TWICE our age  ) I got mine on my birthday Write for 365, pass that only 1 question wrong out of 40 (concerning when to call cops [I said always, it's only if $500+ damage]), take my 365 to another window, pass the eye exam, g outside see, dude (dude says; 'I haven't seen anyone today who dserved to be passed', did the practical road test in light snow (only mistake, failing to slow down 'enough' for a Railroad Crossing [THAT WAS PAVED OVER and the track only went 10FT on either side of the ROAD! I even mentioned that, ad he said " I'm not here "]), go back to testing center, have photo taken, and ther ya' go. Drove home 1.5 hrs after arriving to have my B-day paty! No wait, no graduated licence, no hasle. Got my Int'l drivers licence the next week (took 30mins).
Seiously it sucks for newdrivers now. Instead o making the TESTS harder and make people RESPECT the rules, they make the tests easier and make you take longer. SUX!

However I disagree with you about raising the age. Lower the AGe, but make te TEST hard as hell. I think at 17 I was a beter driver than a large majority of the population, because I had experience on a motorcycle (makes you HYPER aware of your surroundings/road/road conditions), and driving in bad conditions (I used to drive to the ski hill all the time [and then have fun in te parking lot doing controled moves in an open space], plus I had to drive the gravel roads to/from the cottage) I think it's just a question of making a BETTER driver not an older one. There is a SMALL amoun of truth to the young driver being a show-off, but no matter WHEN that first year is, that's when that will happen, it's not like a 17 year old is any more adult; that won't happen until AFTER High School.

*I imagine 10 months cuz it's the closest 2-digit number in me mind!*

Either that, or the school system in QC REALLY needs help.

I said the minimum age limit in the US is horribly low. 15 years old? Bet you most of them are crazed over the speed they'll achieve and the "vroom vroom" they do in front of ya to show ya they're excited to start!

Eden, you are a funny man:)

Think of yourself at 15 yrs. and 7 months (not too long ago!). Would you consider yourself capable of driving (well) at that age, and without showing off? I believe you would. Don't make laws based on the lowest common denominator, ALTHOUGH there are ALOT of people that barely exceede the LCD, but STILL.. don't ruin MY getting to drive (and drive well) because 9 out of 10 teens suck at driving (and are idiots and assholes).

Driving age should be 18+. I say this with experience. I was a lunatic as were all my friends at the age of 16 and by 18 I had already been in a number of accidents and had totalled my brand new car. I had also lost a good friend in an accident. Rock went clear through his head when he rolled his truck.

And that was before GTA. I couldn't imagine what I would have been like driving at 16 after a couple of hours playing vice city.
