Hi all,
I'm attacking with a 4/4 double strike creature, and my opponent
chump blocks with a 1/1 vanilla creature. His blocker dies in the
first combat step, but do I get to deal 4 damage to my opponent
in the second combat step, or is my 4/4 considered blocked and
does no damage to my opponent?
The above came up in a game yesterday (I was actually watching
this and not exchanging in the combat), and we weren't 100% sure.
So is it that once the double striker is blocked, even though he
killed the blocker in the first combat damage step, he doesn't
do any damage to the opponent, or does he get through for 4?
Thanks!

Blocked is Blocked. This is really no different than when an opponent
blocks with a creature and then does something to sacrifice or otherwise
remove it from combat. The attacker remains blocked.
Trample changes this. As does the ability possessed by Lone Wolf or a few
others that allow the creature to deal it's damage to the opponent "as if
Lone Wolf weren't blocked".

Your 4/4 is still considered block. Once a blocker is declared
for an attacker, it is blocked and it will *stay* blocked until
the end of the attack phase regardless of what happens to the
blocker. If you Shocked the 1/1 before *any* damage dealing, your
4/4 would *still* do no damage to your opponent (in either
step).

Your 4/4 _is_ blocked. (No "considered" about it.) Having its blocker die
does not in any way "unblock" it; only leaving combat, or False Orders, can
do that. (Having Combat phase end makes every attacker and blocker leave
combat.) So no, it doesn't assign damage to defending player, since it's
blocked.
Now if you gave it Trample, you could do what you want. Double Strike and
trample is a powerful combination...

It is that, correct. He's blocked, he doesn't have any particular ability
that lets him assign or deal damage straight to the player while blocked,
so he doesn't actually assign -any- combat damage in the second combat-damage
step - he doesn't have anywhere he can legally assign it to.
