In the past few weeks, a malfunction has cropped up. When I make a
recording by pushing the record button on the side of the unit, unless
the voice recording application had been first launched, the recording
that I make causes all previous recordings to be erased. Thus if I am in
the launcher, or in any application other than voice memo, making any
recording wipes that portion of memory.
I found that this does not happen if I direct recordings to the SD card,
but the SD card does not respond fast enough to enable voice
recording--at least not the cheap card that I have in at present (32 MB
for $6 at Fry's).

When I press that button it automatically launches the Voice Memo app. Try
checking the button setup in Preferences to see if it still calls the Voice
Memo app.
If that is not the problem, perhaps a reset will solve it.
