Radeon 9800 Pro vs GeForce FX 5900 Ultra

Hi guys,

I recently read the VGA Buyer's Guide here at Tom's Hardware, and noticed the advantage in performance that the GeForce FX 5900 Ultra has over the Radeon 9800 Pro. My question is, even though it is better performance wise, is it also better quality wise? I've seen in the past that ATI cards appeared to have a better visual quality than Nvidia's, and Nvidia also seems to have troubles with their drivers. Not to mention the rumor of them cheating in benchmarking tests. Maybe someone can help me, thanks.

This question has been asked way too many times. There are other good hardware sites besides this one, search them and you'll find lots of good info.

Heh ok,
I was just wondering if anyone had some first hand experience of the actual visual quality of these graphics cards. Oh well

Its better but i doubt you can see it with naked eye. If you zoom in some frame youll see the difference...Butn the radeon 9800pro is more elegant than the Fx5900, cooler quiter etc...Both are real beast tough

Check out this review . The VGA guide on Tom's defies several other websites, and seems to be a bit sketchy, so before you go buying, do more research. As for image quality, there is little difference these days (with noncheating drivers) but ATi still has the upper hand. Especially with AA.

These days, no matter what company you like, be it nVidia, ATi, or whatever, no matter how logical your reasons, you're labeled an idiot or a fanboy, or both.

ATi cards DO have better quality, and it IS noticable!

I'm not just basing that off articles I've read.

I owned a Geforce 4 Ti4400, and while I think it was a good card, my 9800 Pro besides being super uber alot faster, also has better visual quality.

The anti-aliasing in particular is better on ATI cards than nVidia cards, and ATi cards also have an advantage in anisotropic filtering.

Nvidia drivers DO cheat in alot of things, including cheating with anisotropic filtering in UT2k3 on their current driver. LAME!

Wow,
thanks guy. Helped alot, especially Willamette. Nice to have some first hand experience. I myself have a GeForce 4 Ti4200, so I can imagine the leap in performance/quality I'd get, especially being you had a Ti4400. Thanks again

I think that's a bit of an unfair comparison. I don't have hands-on experience with these cards but wouldn't it be reasonable to say the Geforce FX 5900 also has better anti-aliasing quality than a Geforce 4 Ti, and thus it's not necessarily worse than a Radeon 9800?

lol, yeah, I was thinking that too. I mean, of course the 9800 Pro is gonna look, its a next gen card. I'm mainly interested in the quality of the 9800 Pro vs FX 5900. But I'm still glad he was able to give me some first hand knowledge of how much better it actually is than the Ti series. Also, would any of you recommend waiting to get a new graphics card, when ATI and Nvidia release their next series, ones that will breeze over HL2/Doom 3. Being I have a Ti4200, I'm not sure if it's worth spending the $400 on a 9800 Pro right now, that's probably the only one I'd consider if I did get one now. Let's hear your thoughts

Oh, you wanted some first-hand experience, well sorry for coming off cold like that. As for waiting for the next ATI plus Nvidia cards; there will always be another generation coming, so you can't keep waiting, just buy whenever you feel like it.

Also, pricewatch.com has Radeon 9800's starting at $330, $400 is kind of ridiculous unless it's for the Hercules Prophet 9800 which has superior cooling compared to stock models.

ENOUGH OF THIS!!!!

Everyone, go get urself a Matrox and praise it's Image quality LOL

okay seriously...........
ATi does not have better drivers than nVidia Period.
9800pro beats Fx5900Ultra in some tests
5900Ultra beats 9800 pro in some tests
fanAtics will disagree
nVidiots will disagree
Matrox fanboy --> Grape will disagree
crazy 3Dfx people thinks Voodoo 5 6000 and RAMPAGE will dominate the video market
I think you're all insane
Everyone has different opinions
different websites even have different benchmark results
different owners will have different problems
so?
what can u do?
use onboard video~~ LOL

If I bought a card everytime I felt like it, I'd be broke. The buying pattern that makes sense to me, in regards to both cpu and 3d card is this: If the new top end card is over 50% faster than my current one, upgrade. So when a card comes out that gets 7500+ in 3dmark03 or over 20,000 in 01, thats when im gonna upgrade.

As for my cpu, well I actually kinda bent the rules as I went from a 1700 pally to a 1700 tbred. That tbred is sitting @ 2376mhz, over 50% faster than my pally...
