I have installed a Terratec sound device and have configured it to play all
sounds including midi..
I can play mp3s and CDs OK but the Volume Control Options has the Advanced
Controls greyed out and doesn't bring up the list of checkboxes so that I
can tick MIDI.
The only options it allows are Wave, SW Synth and CD Player.

Rightclick the volume icon (probably next to clock) and click "Open
Volume Control". Top left click Options and check Advanced Controls.
