Sorry if this is a faq.
My in-laws want to buy a computer but don't want internet access. Do you
have to connect to activate and register Windows XP or can you phone
Micro$oft to get a code?
Thanks

Mike;
You may be confusing activation and registration.
Activation is mandatory, registration is optional.
Many computers from the major OEMs such as Gateway, Dell, HP, Compaq etc
come preactivated.

Others will need to be activated.
If activation is required, there will be two options, internet or phone
activation.
If activating over the phone is chosen, follow the prompts and call
Microsoft at the number displayed.
Takes about 5 minutes.

Mike

When they purchase they should ask for a CD and make sure they are given
the Product Key. The key is made of 50 or 54 alpha numeric characters.

Takes about 5 minutes. And be sure to have pen and paper at the ready.
