Computer keeps freezing! CPU too Hot?

Well I went in for another look - I don't know about other dell models but
the dimension 2100 has its power supply over the motherboard - and I
unhinged the powersupply and noticed the cpu fan not running when the system
was on. So I removed the fan and turned the computer back on. It ran for
about 10 minutes and froze. I went in and touched the heatsink and OUCH!
So I would have to guess that's the problem, right?

Thanks

You got it.

I can't recall if that fan is BIOS monitored or if the connector is
proprietary.

Do you get a fan failure error message when you boot the system (just after
the Dell splash screen)?

If the cooling fan does not spin, at least part of the time, it has probably
failed. I would replace it. Without proper ventilation, especially inside some
of the smaller microATX cases, a CPU can overheat quickly and only cause the
system to freeze up if you are lucky. If you are unlucky, you'll smell the ugly
smell of electronic components burning up... Ben Myers
