just a thought, but does anyone else think its really spiffy that (from what i know) the 5700 will be released around the same time as half life 2? how do you think this card will run the game? just a thought, being silly

More about : hl2 5700

Nvidia should release 5700 in september but hl2 will only be launched on sept. 30, but i think be available for purchased on november or december.

i could run that game very well, but remember 5800
> DDR2
> 128-bit memory
> super huge heatsink

i would not even bother waiting for the 5700

but instead for the: NV38 which should be quite faster than the gfx5900 ultra

i doubt nvidia is stupid enough to make the same mistakes they made with the 5800 again, i think the 5700 will be the next 5600 ultra

5600 ultra rev 1.0 you mean?

Gee, and to think that the Radeon 9700 has been out for over a year now. I'm not saying Nvidia is behind the times, but......

Ion, Actually that would be FX5600Ultra revision 2.7+ (Gainward did the R2.5 with their 450/450[900] IMO)

And jmecor, I wouldn't wait for the NV38 at all. It's a n amditedly MINOR bump to the FX5900U, whereas the FX570 (NV36) could be either a simple core/memory bump or a significant change. It's not certain yet. However BOTH will be more money than they are worth. And anyone considering the FX5700s shouldn't think about the NV38 as it is probably going to cost alot more than they are willing to pay (twice the price of an FX5600U-R2 ?).

The only cards to wait for are the FX5700, could be a big change, but could be just a small bump (and the wait is short compared to the NV38 [or so reports would have us beleive]), and the R420, NV40, RV380. All of those will be big changes, the only reason to wait for anything else IMO is that the card you might want NOW will come down in price.

sargeduck, I wouldn't say they are behind the times, but perhaps they ARE behind the 8-ball.

but why would they use DDR2 again, it's not even capable of what's it meant. I'll upgrade next and wait for NV40 or r420 and pci-express.

So the 5700 is just gonna be a hyped up 5600 then? 256bit mem bandwidth or not?

it's still 128-bit/ddr2, Nvidia said that if 256-bit memory bus will be used, it may outpaced the 5900 ultra.

maybe the nv38 (fx5950 or something) will use
DDRII
256-bit Memory
500Mhz clock
1Ghz RAM

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well, people are gettin 9800pros up to like 750mhz so i guess its not that much difference

Actually no, the 256bit version would be UNDERCLOCKED (well slower core) like I said, so it wouldn't compete with the 5900s; and wouldn't be DDR-II (especially since so many people are having so much trouble with it). There are TWO possibilities, and I doubt ANYONE knows for sure which one has been chosen. I haven't seen a single nVidia source say anything yet, so I wouldn't be to sure it's one or the other.

Yes, I've read the article you're obviously refering to, but there are others out there stating the other possibility. A core/mem. overclock would make sense. DDR-II still doesn't make sense IMO.

will they be using DDR2, where it transfers twice the amount of data per clock compared to DDR1?

or are they just using it to get higher frequencies?

FYI All, HL2 WAS due to be released september 30....now delayed till god knows when. I think this may be due slightly to the AA issue on they new cards.

In addition, since Doom 3 was also due to be out this year, now mid 2004 at best, I wouldnt hold out that much hope. Athough in saying that, from all the cool video footage available (anyone seen the high res bink vid of HL2??) it looks pretty much finished to me. I say forget AA and just run the game in 1280x1024. you dont need to runs games any higher!

now i can save more for my video card or maybe a cpu/ram/mobo/gpu upgrade. But the delays in both games is disappointing. if it's true!

This is my problem, my display is only 15" and supports only up to 1024*768. So i need AA for both games or i'll see the dreaded jaggies.

Very Dissapointing I know! I really want to get a new graphics card too. was thinking of a 9800pro but if said games are not due out till end of year/ next year then im a little concerned they will make them even more demanding and render my shiney new 9800pro card out of date. mind you, my Ti4200 has seen me good for a year and a bit so maybe it wont be a bad investment.

I just want something that will play HL2, Doom3, Deus Ex2 and Farcry at 1280x1024 max details with no AA (but wouldnt mind if it could do AA on top ;-)

IF they use 256bit it will be DDR-I (as per Xbit Labs) and likely running at about 300-350mhz; if they use 128bit, it will be DDR-II running at 250mhz/(1000) (as per the Inquirer).

jmecor, yes that article was posted a while back, as was my reference to Xbit's info on the FX5700U. The whole thing is NEITHER has a good strong credible source. I tend to trust Xbit a little more, but the Inquirer does break a heck of alot of tech news.
