Forum Old Man/Woman's Club : Other friend having lockup probs

Word : Username :

I'm posting for one of my friends.

If he leaves his computer on for 30 minutes or so his computer will lock up in win 98/2000. His speakers make a high-pithed noise, hard drive light turns on, and hardlocked.

He's got
Abit KA7
SlotA 750 Athlon
256MB Crucial
64MB Kingston
Sound Blaster Live
20G Maxtor
6G Maxtor
Phillips 8xCDRW
Acer 50x
Voodoo 3 3000 AGP
Linksys 10/100base
3Com 10base

I thought it might be heat or power. If we can get his computer working he will be running SETI for our team!

He probably hasn't updated much anything past what is on windows update, direct x, and such. I did update the bios for him a few months back. Think new Via 4-in-1 drivers might help?

Yeah, It sounds like it could be heat or power. Why not list P/S wattage and CPU temp in post?

Update drivers with 4in1. The lasest version I think is 4.29? Download it from VIA and it will be latest release.

P/S is 300 watts, got it with a barebones system from who know where. The temp sensor cable was never put in and his cooling is 'standard'. (never did jack) I do remember last time I was over at his house the heat was cranked up crazy high. Also, I know the power isn't very stable there, like if the washer machine/stove/tv is turned on the power might go off. When I was over there one time and I brought my battery backup for my system it had a red light that is supposed to signify a power problem.
