Mouse Freezing?

I have an old Celeron433, Riva TNT2 Ultra Box with Win2000 on it. Just recently the mouse has been haphazard.

About every 3-4 seconds the mouse momentarily freezes and then fixes itself up and then again it goes - all day.

What should I be doing to check this out?

First try a different mouse... could be a bad cord.

Next look in task manager and see if something is hogging CPU time.
