Is it just me? Despite our gains in the graphics market during the last year mainly due to competition between you know who(s)...I just feel that we are lagging.
I mean...right now a GF4 Ti 4200 which came out 2+ years ago can stay within 5-10% of a top end card. What the hell is going on with that? There have been no real gains from Nvidia. Just POWER gains which equals squat for rendering. Sure VPU power helps out but only so much.
The only true innovation I've in the last 5 years (well, besides Glide...and why Nvidia dropped that I'll never understand) is the R300 VPU from ATI. Out of nowhere here they came...it was revolutionary. Here we are though...stagnant.
It would be cool if my small voice could be heard...I would challenge all video card manu's to get up offa that thing! Go borrow James Browns' Hot Pants! Pour some of those PHAT bankrolls into R&D! Quit slacking...we have DOOM ]|[ to play!!! I myself want to see some 16X AA and AF within this next year. And it better be at equal to or above 60 fps. It's possible...I mean, the fps we're attaining for most games today are attainable from cards that came out in the late part of 2001 and early part of 2002...which means they were being tested as early as 2001/2000 and probably conceptually designed in 2000/1999.
And here's the real deal: Manufacturers sit on their cards in order to make more money. If they can control the release of certain cards they can demand more money for them. So, I wonder how many cards they're sitting on? If I were one of them...I wouldn't play by the rules and I'd just release a fat advanced vid card and slay the other company or make them release their fat vid card. But I'd quit doing this release and sit method. The world of computer graphics is at its best when it is shook up. If I were Nvidia or ATI I'd quickly do some shaking of the Graphics tree and find out what falls down. As for now, the current situation sucks....and I find foreplay very boring...I'm pretty sure most gamers do too.
