Would you trust the russians to make the correct calculations to land Mir in the ocean between Chile and NZ?, I wouldent, given thier track record, If I was wusy I'd be moving now

Between Chile and NZ????? Don't you think that is a bit of a wide gap to aim for? Thats like telling somebody that their car is parked some where between Los Angeles and New York City. I wonder why they got such a but space to land that sucker?

If its tourist season, why can't we shoot them?

In a lot of areas the Russians are technologically superior to the U.S. Look at their Jet Fighters, especially the targeting systems on them. Also, the virtually unexplodable fuel tank system, Fly by wire system.

Also, they have extremely accurate satellites. But, I do know mir is a bit wonky. so they gave it a large target. I just hope no deep sea fishing people are in the area in the day.

WHAT???
Are you nuts?

Russian military airplanes are crap! Almost as the civilian
airplanes are!
Most of russia´s aircraft technology was obtained through espionage!
And thy didn´t do a great job with it!

Above all, if they are superior to american aircraft why d they have the habit of crashing a lot more than their american counterparts?

the migs were actually superiour to any us combat planes at the time. that's some 15~20 years ago. but now because of the fall of communism and lack of govenment funding, they can't research and develop new planes. the new f22's are the most technologically superior than any russian figher jets. if you ask me, the US is spending way too much on military. over 50% of the national budget goes to the military. give me .00001 percent of that!!!

My slowest PC out of 61 computers is @1050Mhz

Reply to flavio321

I'm not going to get into a big war over russia vs the US, but let me say this. All of my friends and family over there have phd's and if they are too young for that, they all finished calculus, physics, chemistry, etc by the time they were 16. Their education system over there is far superior to america's. Most of my friends who live over there are teaching math at the university and they are incredibly gifted. I don't know a single american who comes even close. Our education system is based on self esteem vs theirs where you either do it or you fail. Our universities are excellent though, but our society doesn't enthasize it like they do. Basically everyone over there strives for the highest level of education possible. With all the corruption now though it is difficult to get into the university over there without lots of cash or serious contacts.

Unfortionately times are tough and they are getting a brain drain. But for those of you who are ethnocentric, don't underestimate them. Mir has been up in space for 15 years and up until this last year and Alpha was the largest piece of space junk the world had up there. All of NASA's space missions are conducted with the Russians as well.

As far as commercial aircraft, I think the american's have better technology and Aeroflot has began using them. For the longest time they had only their own planes.

I wouldn't say anything they have is crap. I would just admit that the US is by far the richest country and therefor we get all the cool toys like stealth fighters etc... We also have 120 million more people.

Oh and I'm trying to reply to the whole thread, not just LordCaos

If you are worried about getting hit by mir I suggest lottery tickets. You might as well win the lottery while you're at it. I'd trust them just as much as I trust us, and their target area is what??...10% of the Earth's surface???

I have this conversation a lot. American's tend to have this cold war attitude still even 11 years later. Funny part is that I have yet to meet a Russian with the same naive attitude. Maybe you just have to have had some experience with it, but if you don't beleive me go to your local university and see how many russians are on their physics and math faculty. There is a reason for that.

Yeah I know! My maths teacher at school was educated in russia. He used to say, he wasn't allowed to use a calculater till he got to university.

Ahem!

US F117 Nighthawk falls out of the sky in the middle of an airshow. ring any bells?

The only brilliant U.S. aircraft currently in operation is the F15E. At mach 2.5 Class it is the fastest Fighter out there. The F/A-18 is also is kinda ok, with its high maneuverability.

The MiG 29 is one of the fiercest Jet Fighters out there. It is way more maneuverable than any U.S Fighter. The damn thing is unstallable.

Have you seen the Su35 in low level, low speed flight. It can out maneuver those light world war II propellor planes. It also has high top speed.

All of the russian current generation fighters have helmet mounted targetting systems. This means the plane doesn't even have to be pointed at the enemy. You just look at the enemy, and thats it!

There have been quite a few russian jets crashing, but almost all of them are in the hands of other countries.

I dont agree with russian politics and the manner in which they use thier muscle (nor do I agree with the american way for that matter), but I do have to say their flicht technology is impressive.

The upcoming U.S Fighters are likely to be quite an improvement over the current generation. The F22 should be interesting.

Notice how I haven't mentioned any british fighters: Tornado, harrier etc. 'cos they're all crap. (and dont say they did brilliant in the falklands, cos shooting down 20 ancient mirage 3's is nothing exactly to be proud of.)

It's a pitty that mikayon is very short on funding.

The best we can hope for is for the Mir station to fall on New York City, Manhatten. It will be stripped clean before it hits the ground, thereby causing no damage.

Reply to jlbigguy

Of course everyone over there has a PhD. They can't exactly go into business or politics now can they.
All this brings be to a question that I have thought about for a long time.
I work in a University doing research. My question is this: If America is so bad and all these other countries are so superior, why do all these people from other countries come to America do get their education, get degrees, and publish papers?
You don't see Americans flocking to Russia, China, Japan, or India. They all come here to get an education.

I´m not saying that Russians are not inteligent (I have a Russian professor in my University that teaches numerical analysis! It is said he was a great brain in his country!
They´re great chess players too! Just 2 examples of many i could point!) But the fact is they stole much of their technology through espionage from the US!

This one is for flavio321: The only Mig which was something
was the Mig-25 , but it had a itsy bitsy little problem!
It was so fast it couldn´t turn!
The Su-27(?) and Su-29(?) were also good but they were an
imitation of the F-15 and F-18!

P.S:The Helicopter was brought to America by a Russian:
Mr. Sikorsky ! I have to give them credit for that!

P.P.S: As for getting all the cool toys , tell that to the
Russian Nuclear Submarines! :-)
And many secrets are kept that way by the KGB , so you shouldn´t be so sure about the cool toys!

Mordy: Until you fix your sig, I can't have a conversation with you. It's just embaressing. Sorry. It's E=m*c^2. :)

Bubba, that's a great question, but it has too many answers. Historically the US was going through a terrible depression during the 30's but once WWII started our economy was turbo charged into a war machine. By the end of the war this country was a refugee for millions of jews and finally people from all over Europe moved here to save themselves for their war ravaged countries. If you are an American, there is a good chance that your family is over here because of WWII. My family came to the US during the 30's since they were Jews in eastern europe.

Today, the US is a great place to live. People move here for the american dream. I've lived overseas and although I loved it, I finally moved home since my list of pro's for the US was longer than the one to live over there. Taxes alone are enough of a reason to not live overseas. I have dual citizenship, but when I have to give one up it's not going to be my american one.

As far as the Chinese, I'm not sure, but their human rights issues and gov't is probably one reason.

I can't speak on behalf of India, but the professors that I have had came over here educated. Their children of course are educated over here since they are now American.

I suppose the same can be said for the Russians. They all came over here educated. WWII caused a huge migration, a brain drain, to the US, and is the main reason that the US is a superpower today. If you look at the main cities in the US like L.A, NYC, San Fransisco, they all have huge Russian populations (as well as many others) This is home for them too. Thus the melting pot that we call the USA.

Open up a physics/chemistry/astronomy/mathematics book and read the little tidbits about the famous scientists of the 20th century. They were almost all from other countries but eventually moved to this country. What can I say? This country is great. We attribute Einstein to America, but guess what?

Now obviously you know most of this, but the main question still remains. Why get educated and publish papers here? 1 is money and 2 is that there is nothing wrong with our universities. I'm not a big fan of the General Ed curriculum since that should have been completed during high school, but I think the upper division sequence and beyond is great. Highschool is a pathetic mess though and I wish I would have got my GED when I was 14. I didn't know then, but you can get a GED knowing basic geometry, writing, and reading. It's really sad.

The biggest reason I think though is that in America you can get educated in anything and THEN actually get a job in that field. That is what the American dream really is to these people. Imagine being interested in Archaelogy but not being able to study it since your country can't afford or doesn't focus on that field. Basically you are raised to not even think about what you want to do, but what you need to do. Also, the asian populations get educated over here in business and english since we are their competition and partners.

My family in Russia all have PhD's in Zoology, Botany, Geology, etc...but unfortionately these programs aren't the first to get funded. So of course they have gone without salary. Why don't the leave? Well, Russia is their country and they have no interest in leaving. I don't blame them. But it sucks...

LordKaos:
Su-27 is not a copy of the F15. It is way bigger and heavier. The design is way different.

Su-29 is a propellor plane! Perhaps you mean the MiG-29. It is not a copy of the f/A-18. Its been around for a lot longer.

None of the Russian Jets can perform maneuvers like the Tailslide, or the famous cobra!

Mordy: I said in a lot of areas. Things are changing now though cos of the lack of funding in russia.

Actually that's not dumb at all. When I lived in Europe they didn't know either until I made my friends dinner. Tacos are a mexican meal made by folding a baked or soft tortilla shell around meat, lettuce, tommatoes, cheese, and hot taco sauce (think spicy). They are really good.

WRONG - I and 20000 spectators saw a Su 27 do a cobra TWICE in succession over Swartkops Air Force base (near Pretoria).

This was the 75th anniversary of the South African Airforce)

Attendees included

U.S.A F15 and F16
Russia Su 27 , Mig 29 and Bear
Royal Air Force Red Arrows aerobatics team
+ lots of rare African stuff

IMHO cobra was invented by a Russian pilot (or at leasr USSR)

I'd love to take more time to post, but I've gotta jet soon. (Every pun intended.)

But the Russian's have had some mad skillz when it comes to aircraft. Such as their skill with welding. Who else can make such an inexpensive but lethal aircraft? I think that's their main skill.

Oh, and what about their twin-rotor helicopters that don't need an anti-torque tail rotor? You've gotta admit, that's pretty wiz stuff. The Russians are cool in my book.

Chimps normally do not eat their young, even when starving. But for some unknown reason, a group of males will occasionally go beserk and murder an infant and then eat it.

No apparent reason. Just evil...

Eh. **shrug**
Humans eat things. We're omnivores. That's what we do. Plants, animals, whatever, they're all living entities... until we eat them.

We're predators, and just about everything else on this Earth is prey to us. We don't condemn a cat for eating a mouse, or a spider for eating a fly. Why condemn people for just following their nature?

The only differences is that people have social laws to follow, and breaking them can incur consequences. So eating your neighbor's cat is bad. And eating your neighbor is bad. But eating your own cow or your own pea, that's just life.

Prey is prey is prey. The only things that should matter to what makes good prey and what doesn't are taste, nutritional value, and prey with negative social consequences.

- Sanity is based purely on point-of-view.

Reply to slvr_phoenix

I'd say that the conclusion is that we can eat ANYTHING that we want to, but doing so may incur consequences.
