I just formatted away my old XP installation and made a new XP install and it is blindingly fast!! Why? It is always like this, works really fast at first but with time it gets slower and slower and I defrag the disk regularly. Is it all the extra crap I install (antivirus programs and the like that run in the background) or something else. I want to keep my windows running this fast. How can I do that?

There are a number of things you can do to eliminate bottlenecks. I will only give you a few because you were not very specific about your problem. First, take away the eye candy. Use classic mode and eliminate the effects. That may help. Of course, get rid of any options on any apps that take away resources. Check and make sure all your drivers are installed correctly and are up to date. This is especially true of chipset drivers. I hope this will give you a start. Take off the frills and see what happens.
