I'm going to be getting a new comp soon, which will need to be networked to share an adsl connection.. Currently I am using d-link homePNA pci and usb cards for the other 3 computers in the house, in combination with some software called midpoint lite which directs traffic. The problem is, this midpoint lite program is proxy-based, and I cant get email to work on any of the other computers, nor icq, nor morpheus, nor gamespy. ;)

I love to play fps games, and since im getting a nice new system im obviously very concerned! So to get to the point, I have heard a lot of sites mention NAT technology which seems to be what I need supported. Although im still unclear as to what it does. I was also looking into getting a home phoneline network router, and came across 3 which may suit my needs.. although I really dont know which to buy! Here are my thoughts..

D-LINK DHN-1000 Ethernet to HomePNA bridge
http://www.dlink.com/products/Digi [...] a/dhn1000/
-this seems to fit the bill, however it doesnt have any NAT or firewall capabilities so I dont know if I need to buy something else in conjunction with it? I dont want to have to run any software anymore if possible.. the dlink site mentions something called the dl-704 gateway which maybe I need also, however that would certainly cost a lot for the 2 of em

NETLINK RP334
http://www.netgear.com/product_vie [...] =12&zrp=98
-this really seems like the best of the best. From what I read, it really does it all and anandtech gave it a good review :).. like I said im new to networking though and this thing is extremely expensive (~$260 US!)

LINKSYS HPRO200
-this seems like a mini netgear rp334.. also I got extremely mixed reviews when searching the web, and a lot of people had some serious problems with this thing.. but its an option so I thought id put it down incase anyone used it or knew something about it.. its also cheap.

SO to summarize
-I want to play games on a HomePNA network, what is the best solution (hardware or software)
-If I go the hardware route which seems best.. which router should I choose to buy? And if I get the d-link bridge, do I need anything else with it to work correctly?
-What the heck is NAT? And will it fix my problems connecting to email, gamespy, morpheus, etc.?

Thanks I really am in the dark on this one, so forgive me for my complete lack of experience and/or knowledge about networking!

::EDIT:: I should mention, the preferred router out of those would be the d-link dhn-1000 since its a decent price and the other homePNA cards we have are also d-link.. so if anyone can verify that it meets my needs ill jump on it ;)
Edited by cyn1k on 03/11/02 04:49 AM.
