Powercolor R9800SE review @ OC-NZ

Since there's been alot of talk about the R9800SE and lttle info. HERE's the FIRST review I've seen. Also note that AS IS SAID, there's two versions of the R9800SE 128 and 256 bit. Anywho interesting review, and of course the 256bit version clobbers the R9600P (except in UT2K3 at stock, OC back to clobbered).

Surprisingly when OC'd it even beats the FX5900U on many an occasion. Looks like the next R9500non-pro (wolf in sheep's clothing). Hack and OC specialist have a new toy.

Not surprising that PC would be a supplier of the SE.

As always, Enjoy!

OMG! Confirmed! Radeon 9800SE IS a 9500non-pro!

Look! It sits on the 9700 PCB, just as the 256-bit 9500Non-Pro did. It has 4 piplelines disabled in software, just as the 9500non-pro did! And we know that the 9800 chip is nothing more than a 9700 chip reworked slightly to support high clocks!

So a 9800SE is an overclocked 9500non-pro, for 1/3 more money!

The 128-bit version will probably suck arse because of memory bandwidth limits. I wager that probably only the 256-bit version will be able to be softmodded.

ATi is getting is about as bad with naming schemes as Nvidia was last year with the GeForce4 series.

My OS features preemptive multitasking, a fully interactive command line, & support for 640K of RAM!

Crash, and as long as it's not ONLY made by PC, I'd recommend it depending on it's price in 1 month's time (give it time to come down).

We shall see. Still not my type of card though.

Interesting performance figures though.

And UFO, the 128bit SE will likely be the one they've slated to compete with the FX5200s. We shall see there too.

Off to drink, back later... MAYBE, we shall see...

NO NO NO NO NO!!!

The performance numbers you see in that review are misleading you! Look at Newegg. Their Connect3d 9500np 128MB card is a 256-bit version, and ALL the reviews say it works with the driver hack. Now look at the 9800SE cards, NONE of the reviewers have had such luck (well, maybe a few by now, haven't looked in a few days).

The review you linked to is a 9800SE hacked to 9800 standards. The hack is no more likely to work than the 9500np>9700 hack. In fact reviews by actual purchasers have shown the 9800SE>9800 hack to be LESS likely than the 9500np>9700 hack.

And here's the kicker, the Connect3d 9500np 128MB 256-bit card cost $133, the 9800SE cost $200, and they're the same damned card! As for the chip itself, the same Omega drivers that enable 9700 mode on the 9500np also enable 9800 mode on a 9700, so...

WHY PAY $200 FOR A 9800SE WHEN THE 9500NP IS THE SAME THING FOR $133?

Read my reply to Ape. The 9800SE is a rip-off.

Of course it will sell. It will sell like hotcakes based on name alone! People who know a bit about the 9800 but know nothing of what SE means will think "Hey, 9800! $200! W00T! What's this SE thing? Must be an OEM card. Oh well, the price is great, it's probably just underclocked a bit..." And then they will buy a 9500non-pro with a 9800 sounding name for a full 66% price premium.

Crashman you are comparing a card that has been out there for about a year to a new one. I'm not saying RIGHT NOW, I'm saying once prices come down. Wait, Breath, Wait, Breath. Everything will be fine. Both cards SUCK, however once the R9500s disappear it appears that there will still be a card with hidden secrets. That's all I was saying, I still wouldn't recommend either to anyone except those who now how to go about RMA'ing stuff (that doesn't mod) and those who know their way around both the softmod and hardmod. Anywhoo, just info for the masses.

Crash you rely need to relax.

Yes, but I doubt it will drop significantly in price before it leaves the market. And those benchmarks are deceiving since most of the retail cards won't run right when hacked, also most don't have 256-bit RAM. So your chances of getting that cheap 9500np to run modified as a 9800np are probably better than your chances of getting a 9800SE to run as a 9800np.
