Assuming it is true that one can disable RAID in the system BIOS to
get two separately addressable drives, is it also necessary to blow
away the pre-installed OS? (Dell's on-line ordering system will not
configure two drives w/o RAID.)

It is possible to disable without reinstalling. The simplest way is to
order a RAID1 (redundancy) configuration. You can easily break the
mirror, and set up the second drive independently without losing data.
It's harder to do the job with a RAID0 array - that would most likely
require a full system rebuild.

yes ,you can order from dell to seperate hard drives not configured in RAID.
i ordered online ,custimized it online. look closely where you choose the
hard drives,they have them with out the Raid configuration"David Ellis"
