Tried as previously suggested: "sound" & "sound troubleshootings" - no help.
In fact I no longer have any adio now after trying remedies laisted.
1) CD-ROM: Get error "win media player could not locate specified file, etc"
Does media player have to be on a network or on line in order to play
cd's locally? If so advise how to get rid of this monster & revert back to my
old settings.
2) ON LINE: can select stations, music OK. No audio from speakers. Every
indication on player shows that it is playing
3) Mentioned in tropubleshooting, on media player menu click on "tools" &
"options". Can't located this selection on my player. Am I looking in wrong
place?
4) Device Mngr.: indicates that audio sound card & associtated components
all working properly - no conflicts. Have "ESS/ES1869" PnP sound card.
5) Very Annoying "thump, thump, thump,..........." sound on startup &
shutdown.

You do not need to be on-line.
Start>Control Panel>Sounds and Audio
Under the Volume tab, Device Volume, make sure the Mute button is
not checked and the slider is all the way to the right (High) and check
"Place Volume icon in taskbar", click Apply and OK. Then, rightclick the
Volume icon in the Taskbar (probably next to clock) and Open Volume Control.
Go to top left, click Options and click Advanced Controls, now see if
anything is Muted, if they are, uncheck them.

ALREADY THOUGHT ABOUT MUTING, TKS.
WENT TO "RESOURCES FOR TROUBLESHOOTING SOUND PROBLEMS IN WIN XP", NO HELP.
DID THE SOUND TROUBLESHOOTER - NO HELP.
ALSO TRIED LOOKING UP REFERENCES, ALONG WITH ADDITIONAL TROUBLESHOOTING
NOTES. THIS IS WHY I'M HERE NOW.

Additional info. Reloaded XP. Now lost "volume control" would not allow me to
place in tast bar because "program not loaded". Where do I find & how to load?

Curred problem. Apparently XP doesn't see ISA slot (where my sound card was
located). Fortunately I had extra PCI slot. Now have audio.
