Hi all

Upgraded a Dell Dimension 4300s' (P4 1.8Ghz 512MB Ram) graphics card from the Dell issued Geforce 3 Ti200 to an MSI FX5600-VDTR and can't actually notice any improvement, specifically in UT2003.

This is on Windows XP Prof. with all updates installed, and have tried the latest detenator drivers from MSI (ver 44.03) and some newer ones from Guru3d (ver 45.23).

In UT2003 we seem to range from 40FPS to 80FPS depending on the quantity of action, this FPS is exactly the same with either card installed.

We also run the standard benchmark and the bot match dropped by 1, however the flyby improved by about 20.

Please help before MSI have their stupid card sent back!

Thanks very much!

p.s. Reviews of this particular model have been excellant from various websites... so either they are being bribed or I have installed something incorrectly??!?!

And this site actually chooses it as editors favourite in this article! http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030714/vga_card_guide-70.html

If you just bought this card, I suggest that you DO send it back. How much did you pay for that card, $200? Well get a Radeon 9600 Pro for leess than $160 or a Radeon 9700 for less than $230. These are great cards. The FX line has been performing terribly in the HL2 And Tombraider benchmarks. The FX5600 is slower than a GF4 Ti 4200 in DX8 stuff. (And even slower in DX9 stuff than GF4 DX8 only card) If your on a budget, the 9600 serries is the only way if you want DX9 visueals in new games. I know its a bummer, but someohow nVidia really f***ed up on their FX cards. If you look at all the Nvidia & Half-Life 2 posts you'll see what I mean.

Me neither, Nvidia used to make such good stuff, fast stuff at least.

Yea it seems the fx range has some issues with DX9 games but dont jump to conclusions to fast i'm sure nividia will reach into their deep pockets and pull some sort of a fix to accomidate the problems. Also its early on in the piece with DX9 games and all. But if you paid good money for your card i would try to get a refund. Get a 9800np, really the only card worth upgrading to in my opinion. I have a 5600fx but i got it dirt cheap and didn't expect it to outperform a Ti4200, which i nearly purchased, so i'm happy with it until these new games come out, actually waiting for stalker, until i upgrade to a top line card.

Wow, this is almost EXACTLY what happened to me over the past week...

I have a Dell 4300 (1.8GHz, 768MB SDRAM) and I upgraded from a GF3 Ti200, to a PNY FX5600 Ultra, and I too see basically zero performance increase. Games I play are Everquest and Shadowbane, and I could care less about the FPS games that seem to get the hype, but graphic lag/frame-rates are basically the same after I put in the new card, and upgraded to DX9.

Couple guild members think that the problem may just be due to the low processor speed...it just can't take advantage of the new graphics card's features.

Anyway, just wanted to post and say I'm in the same boat, debating what to do next. Will look into the online place I ordered from about their return policies I suppose.

The processor is fine. Its not the processor speed that's killing you, its the SD-RAM. Sure you have alot of RAM, but alot of slow RAM doesn't neccessarily mean better performance than a paltry 256 megs of DDR400 RAM. Also, get rid of the FX5600 if you can. Plz do it. You'll regret it if you don't. I really hate how nVidia is ripping people off lately like the folks in this thread. I hope nVidia can sort it all out for ya.

I figured that might be part of it as well, but no chance of changing that until I really need to upgrade the PC, which might be next year or so. ;)

A GeForce3 Ti 200 is still a pretty good card though. You'll probably be able to get by until your next upgrade. However, a Radeon 9600 Pro is a very attractive option right now. It might be worth it experimenting with that card.

Agreed, if you're going to upgrade, and you don't have a lot of money, the 9600Pro really is the only way to go.

As each day goes by, I hug my 9600Pro just a little tighter.

Yeah I think your limited by the rest of your system, in particular the SDRAM. If that 1.8 is a northwood you could upgrade to an i845PE motherboard with 512MB PC2700 and see a large improvement in performnace and also the oppurtunity to overclock (the 1.8Ghz NW was renowned for its overclocking ability).

All sorted now... we took out the 5600 piece of crap.

Install my 18month old AGPx4 Ti4200 and realised some great FPS gains, no more lag on screen... runs sweet!

Thanks for all the help guys!

And THANKS geforce for wasting our time with these shite FX cards
