I have a Geforce FX 5200 (non-ultra) and i have installed DirectX 9.0. How can i forced it to use DirectX 8.1 shaders. Is it be reinstalling DirectX 8.1 or are there any other steps? It seems that a GeforceFX card get better performance running in DX8.1 & pixel shaders 1.4

I wish I could help you pal, there's nothing I can do. Maybe someone else has a solution.

My OS features preemptive multitasking, a fully interactive command line, & support for 640K of RAM!

With an ATI card I was able to install directx 8.1 over the dx9.0 on accident. Check your driver CD, both should be on there. I don't know if it'll work, but its worth a try. So much for optimized for dx9.

i don't exactly get it, how did extremetech able to force it to use DX8.1. Maybe by using old video card driver and dx8.1.

I think they used an ingame option of selecting the DirectX path. Personally, I don't know for sure, but that's the impression I have received.

oh!, i forget about that, Like in 3dmark 2003.
Where i was able to force it to use Pixel shading 1.4, but the fps boosted by just a small 3-5fps.

no. I just remembered that some programs option can forced a video card to use DX8.1, maybe HL2 also have this option.
(just like in 3dmark 2003)

With Rage3dTweak you can force pixel + vertex shader versions, and enable/disable bump mapping, in essence forcing a lower DX version.

But Rage3D only works with ATi Radeon graphics processors.
I have a Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 card.
