Launch Date set for HL and the R9800XT @ Alcatraz

Just stumbled across THIS at the Inquirer.

Kinda interesting, and puts to rest the rumours that HL2 will be delayed until December or '04.

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=11547

$399 for both a nice new card and HL2, doesn't seem half bad. Wonder what the bundle price/situation will be in Canada.

Also note the rumoured auction price for the rights to HL2. Wow!

I just saw the clock speeds expected from the 9800XT.

Whoop de doo. hehe

415Mhz core, 365Mhz mem.

I can do more than that allready with my R9800pro.

Yeah, but considering the starting point maybe that means that you could reach 450/400  . Imagine 500/500 what would that be like compared to the FX5800. Yes it's unrealistic to think the 0.15 would reach 500 without serious specialized cooling, but it would be neat.

I just wonder the exact composition (DDR v DDRII, etc.)

And as I seem to be saying alot recently;
We shall see.

I can surpass even 450 on the GPU (like 460-470) (OMG!) but no 400mhz memory for me:(

Check out the high scores for 3dmark XX at madonion.com, They got 9800 pros at like 536!!

ATI underestimated their product with the 9800, and they're doing it again now. The 9800 Pro should've been released at at least 400/350, if not higher. A few core/board/mem tweaks (or maybe NEW memory) and this one should be released at at least 440/...something higher than 350 lol.

I fear it'll raise performance by a maximum of 10%, even less in some cases lately, given how the R9800PRO sometimes barely surpasses the R300.

They need to work the core inside.

Yeah, but remember those scores at MADFUTRE (as I like to call it) at with Peletier coolers and exotic parts.

I'm talking about straight out of the box. I know it CAN be done, but I'm not talking about after Wackos like you and GW slap CPU Fans on them!

Anywhoo, I do look forward to it just to see what is likely the END of the 0.15 process for high-end parts.

Shall we see? (see I changed it  )

Its' not the 9800XT that I'm particularly excited about at Alcatraz, its HL2! 9800XT is hardly more than a derivative of the great AWESOME R300 introduced last year.

My OS features preemptive multitasking, a fully interactive command line, & support for 640K of RAM!

I got 490mhz out of my 9800pro's core but memory i couldn't get to 400mhz. I heard the PowerColor 9800pro uses 2.2ns memory, but it's restricted by tight timings so highest it could go was 410mhz.

-Intel PIV 2.4C @ 3.84G -Asus P4P800 -OCZ Gold 2x256 3700EL memory @ 256mhz 2.5-3-3-7 -Sapphire 9800pro @ 490/780 -SB audigy -80G Maxtor Diamond Plus9 Ultra ATA-133 hdd -450 Enermax PSU

Well, I don't know if they could raise it that high willamette.

Sure, some entheusiasts can O/C their cards like crazy, but who knows if they use a watercooling setup or crazy voltmods?

Ati has to make money on these chips... so if they have to hand-pick the GPUs and chuck the rest out, or if they get tons of warranty parts back because the GPUs are frying, that wouldn't work.

Still, nice to know the O/C potential is there for entheusiasts... crazy for a 15 micron part...

[EDIT] holy copied post batman, I just read ape's post after posting my own. I know great minds think alike... but that's just creepy.[/EDIT]

Yes, I often find myself getting into a thread late and simply typing;

Ditto what Cleeve said.

Also, what is it they say about Geniuses, there's a fine line between Mania and Genius, so try not to think TOO much like me, try to stay on one side of the fence unlike me.

It means that this card was desined for the IBM XT, but due to legal issues it wasn't released until this year. Just think I can finally play Archon at full-screen.

Actually I have Archon II thatI play with a friend over the internet. We used to play it on his C64 when we were kids (man that was a long time ago).

I still love that game and Battle-Chess sucks in comparison.

I agree, I'd pay $50-100 cdn for a GOOD revamp of Archon with modern graphics and features (like an open online tournament every day). I'd even pay ~$25 for a mediocre revamp.

Amen to that.

I'd pay $150 for a good quality remake of "stunts" with multiplayer...

If you already have tge 9800 pro then this card will be a pure waste of your beer money. My 9800 pro is oced far more than that card already.

F-DISK-Format-Reinstal DO DA!! DO DA!!

Hey, I'm not buying it, I'm not a fan of those power monsters (I like a stable system running low powerc consump).

I'm waiting for the PCI-EX cards, and then I'm willing to sacrifice the beer for the new MOBO/CPU/PSU/MEMORY and the card.
