Thanks everyone for your input and assistance. I've managed to get this
problem to "go away" (by the drastic HD format and system reinstall method")
and I've been regretting doing that ever since!! I'm still rebuilding and
have assorted bugs and gremlins. My computer will never be the same as I had
no restore points or b/u's.
Hopefully this thread will save others from similar disasters!
