Screen turns on red and then turns off

Dell atitude D610. Turns on with red screen for a couple of seconds, then the screen blacks out. Replaced the ac adapter and didn't help. Shouldn't it work without the battery in place? I tried removing the battery and it seems to work the same.

More about screen turns turns
  1. Hello cellarjeff;

    It kinda sounds like the screen itself has gone bad.
    Or it might be the graphics chip on the motherboard.
  2. I would also throw out that the inverter might be bad. Do you have video when you connect an external monitor? Can you put a flashlight to the screen and see anything?
