I just started to get this problem when i first logon, it starts ok, but when
it gets to the logon screen it goes belly up, i get the error below.

winlogon.exe - application error
the instruction at "0x01030154" referenced memory at "0x0000051c". the
memory could not be read.

I had thought about using the copy of the file from my laptop to replace the
file on my desktop to attempt to remedy the problem but alas, it's on htfs so
i can't seem to copy from fat to nfts

any ideas on what i need to do to remedy the problem

Can you log in via safemode ? (press F8 before the Windows logo appears).
If yes, try using MSCONFIG to disable some of your startup programs which
may be the cause.
