I'm currently running a GeForce4 TI4200 128 meg card is is a great card imo. Benchmarks are great, and SOFII and SWG runs great, and slightly overclocked at 275/550.

I got a really great deal on a FX 5600 Ultra 256 card. Installed it, jumped the settings up a bit to 300/575, AND IT SUX!!!! FPS in both SOFII and SWG are to slow to play. Tomorrow I'm heading out to get an ATI!

(yes, I tried all the updated drivers and DX9)

Yeah, sad to see so many letting go of what once was a reliable business enterprise. Now, it's all going down, and ATi's profits and sales keep rising while nVidia somehow doesn't notice they're losing because they are lying by pretending they are good, but little do they know, they're telling this to consumers like US, therefore they think we're dumb, but we're actually aware of what's going on!

Damn that was a long sentence.

Yes, it does suck, but honestly you should still be getting good framerates in those games. AA and aniso are on by default, that is what is going on. But yes, do yourself a favor and get an ATI card.

300mhz core for a 5600ultra?

I believe it is the core rating of a 5200ultra...

Anyway ATi's cards are better than Nvidia atm, especially in the upcoming DX9 games. Just make sure the card you getting is based on R3xx core.

Ok, after reviewing the ATI site, I'm leaning toward the 9600 Pro. It's 128 meg ram, but the clock speeds are awesome at 400 core/600 memory compared to my current TI4200 at 275/550. Heck, those ATI speeds are faster than that POS FX5600U card I bought this week. Any comments on the 9600 Pro? And what makes the 9800 Pro better? It has a slightly slower core speed than the 9600P but has faster memory speed, and is a bit more money. Any comments?

Clock speed never makes the difference. A 5800 Ultra clocks at 500MHZ core, yet the ATi 9700PRO at 310MHZ core can beat it hands down.

I could of course write a long sheet of details on what makes a core perform, but the bottom line is to know: Clock speed isn't everything just like IPC isn't everything. It's mixing more the amount you do per clock, and the clock speed, that you get performance.

The 9800PRO in this example has twice the pipelines, for higher fillrate, twice the vertex shader engines (Geometry engines), and a more advanced SmartShader version. It basically has a few specs that work better in DX9.

This makes me wonder, is ATi's SmartShader 2.1 compatible with the DX9 standard specs? And how about DirectX 9C that's coming out for nVidia's sake, it containing support for the improved DX9 R350 core?

Dammit, you guys are just gonna make me go out and get the 9800, huh? LOL
If you don't feel comfortable spending that kind of money for a card, don't feel obligated to it. Both the 9800 non-pro and 9600 Pro cards are pretty good values in their target range. Seriously though, its highly unlikely you woould be dissapointed with a 9600 Pro card. Ultimately the choice must be boiled down by what kind of performance, features you want, and your budget. So I ask what kind of budget are you on by the way?

Well I have a little business that I run on the side (pc repair, building, network troubleshooting) that keeps my "gaming habit" financed, so spending that kind of money on a card isn't a problem. After reading the specs on the ATI site, I'm leaning toward the 9800 Pro, 128 ram.

I guess what I need to know is, who else out there is playing Star Wars Galaxies? What's the specs of your system? Will I notice a HUGE difference in frame rate between a TI4200 and a 9800 Pro?

I'm running an AMD 2.0 OC'ed it 2.5, 1 gig ddr ram, Asus A7N8X Deluxe mobo, GeForce TI 4200 card.

I don't know for sure on StarWars Galaxies. You'll definitely be able to crank up the res and enable ansiotripic filtering fyou weren't able to handle it already. (ie. If you play the games on both cards on a lower res like 640x480 it will probably appear that they are running the same.

A TI4200 is pretty much able to ace any DX8 game thrown at it like a pro. But, where the biggest difference is going to be is in games thnat make full use of DirectX 9 like Half-Life2. In those games, I can assure you that the difference will probably be phenominal.

My OS features preemptive multitasking, a fully interactive command line, & support for 640K of RAM!

I havnt heard of that... I guess you could, but i dunno why you would want to.

The only difference between the pro and nonpro is the clock speeds.
And that the lower clocked nonpro uses ram rated slower (3.3ns stuff). So it rarely overclocks beyond 315Mhz, opposed to the 2.8ns stuff on the 128mb pro. which can overclock to 360-370 or more.

You CAN do a soft mod from the 9700 series to the 9800 series though.

Negative. It isn't like a 9500 where you have 4 disabled pipelines. The only real difference between 9800 and 9800p is clock and memory speed.

nVidia cheated on me so I left her for ATi. ATi's hotter anyway...
