I bought one at a garage sale.
I have Palm Desktop 4.1.4 on my computer from an ancient Palm 3X.
The desktop and the Sony both work fine, but hotsync will not work.
The old Palm had a serial connection and the Sony has a USB.
When I put hotsync on the Sony it tells me the Serial port is in use.
I have set the connection on the Sony to USB, but it still says the serial
port is in use.
The Hotsync "setup" on the Desktop is light gray and unresponsive, so I
can't do a setup.

Any suggestions on how to get this all to work?
Is 4.1.4 adequate, or must I scout around for a newer version.

Thanks.

I made a little progress by visiting Palm.com. (duh)
I hadn't loaded Hotsync. I did that and set it to USB. Now the greyed menu
is black.

But it still tells me the serial port is busy, even though both the Sony and
the desktop are set to USB.

You need the Sony version of the Palm Desktop, plus various updates
and add-ons that came with the Clie. In particular, it needs a
specific USB driver (the "USB Switcher" ) to get synching to work. You
could probably cobble this all together from the Sony Web site, but if
you send me a blank CDR disk and a postage paid return envelope, I'll
send you a copy of the Clie S300 installation CD, plus all the updates
and patches.

If you don't want to go to that much trouble, go to
http://sonyelectronics.sonystyle.c [...] index.html
and try installing all the updates and patches available for the S300;
that might be sufficient. Here are the actual updates:

http://esupport.sony.com/perl/swu- [...] dl=PEGS300

(I still have my S300, after moving up to an NR-70V - which got fried
- then a TH-55 - which has been repaired twice. The S300 is a nice
little machine.)

I appreciate your help. Unfortunately it is not going well.

1) I installed the Sony desktop and then the USB switcher. The desktop went
fine, but the switcher simply fails to install. It is a new machine running
WXP. Any ideas why it might fail?

2) I exported the datebook and address book from my Palm system. The Sony
desktop imports the datebook, showing 88 entries, but the entries do not
show up on the calender. It will not import my address book, saying it is
corrupt. It will import the addressbook that apparently came with the Palm,
showing their customer service phone number, but that isn't anything.
Are the two files (Sony and Palm) compatible, or am I trying to do the
impossible. And if it is possible, any ideas why mine is failing.
I also tried moving the palm data files to the sony directories (rather than
exporting and importing) but it says it cannot open them.

Even at $5 it is not looking like a good buy; though it is much nicer than
my Palm 3.

I solved #1 myself.
I tried installing it on another computer and read that if I want to use USB
I have to do a custom install. Did that and it works fine.

Still can't solve #2. I am going to ask that again.

They're the same database, so you should not actually have to
export/import. Just copy the relevant .DAT files over from the old to
the new. If that doesn't work, you can export the address book (though
not the datebook or tasks) to CSV (comma separated value) format, and
import it from there.
