Hi All.

I would appreciate your opinions on this:

I have just built a new PC (full rebuild except the GPU) to bring me up to speed. System details:

P4 2.6 / 800mhz
W.D. 40Gb JB Special Ed HD
1Gb DDR 400 (Dual Ch)
ASUS P4P800 Mobo
Abit GF4 4200ti 128mb

The question is...

Will I see a notable performance increase if I KILL my GF4 and buy a new graphics card? Im looking at the ATI 9600 or 9700.

If you could give me a "ballpark" percentage increase (e.g. on 3dMark) that would be cool.

Any help is most appreciated!

Thanks...

Ballpark I'd give the 9700 200% of the GF4 score in 3dMark2003.

That's just a guess, it's probably higher... but the fact is you will be amazed at how the 9700 runs, especially in newer games, and with antialiassing enabled.

If you can afford the 9700 or 9800 at around $210 to $250, don't bother with the 9600 PRO. It's good, but not nearly as good as the 9700/9800 at higher resolutions or with AA enabled.

Radeon 9500 (modded to PRO w/8 pixel pipelines)
AMD AthlonXP 2000+

THe 9600 Pro won't give you a noticeable speed bump. It WILL however be able to handle Directx 9 extensions, PS 2,0, Vertex shader 2.0, & more programmable T&L. In other words it will make a difference in HL2 visually. The 9700 will most definitely give you a very clear speed bump AND a visual boost.

But if I were you, I would wait and hold off on upgrading becausethe video card you have now isn't that bad. I'd wait until HL2 releases and we see price drops. But if your itching to upgrade now, I would get at least a 9700.

My OS features preemptive multitasking, a fully interactive command line, & support for 640K of RAM!
