Yes but they always say that and a few months/years into your save game it
will crash and be unrecoverable. You also tend to get new bugs due to save
game not likely some of the new files.

Is that fixed? I find it strange, that playing for instance an AM C or FC on
either wing, will result in him getting 3 or 4. I mean, it should be
possible to do a decent job - even though a player is out of position, but
you can count on him to get a 5 at best, when not in his IDEAL place.

Luis Garcia cannot play a decent game on the right, even though the game has
him stated as an AM RLC - always gets a 5 on right side

Try running the patch from the disk you have the game installed

Indeed. IIRC, the only time that since CM2s a patch is expressly described as not savegame
compatible were the CM3 original ones; which is no surprise considering how very badly bugged it
was.
Any slightly seasoned CM/FM gamer knows the SI official spin.......assurance that a patch is
'savegame compatible' should be taken with a large amount of salt. (spot the you-know-what)
Yes, it is compatible. You can patch an existing save up. But anything that happens afterwards,
they will not be held accountable as it is the traditionally cited caveat that it is best to
'start a new game to take advantage of the improvements made in a patch'.
So it is technically savegame compatible, but practically you are out on your own sweet arse if
the game goes belly up. Marketing-speak, you gotta love it.

I found that managing with Portugal, Deco would never get higher than a
5, playing just behind the strikers, or as part of the two central
midfielders! Had to drop him in the end

In the directory : My Computer/HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sports Interactive
Ltd\Intstalls\Football Manager 2005

I have:
(Default) (value not set)
Path D:\Games\Football Manager 2005\ (where I've installed it)
Version 5.0.0(unpatched) 5.0.2 (patched)

Patch patched the game fine.

Check that the path in the registry is the same as where the game is
installed.

Why only 5 at best? A decent player is a decent player. Or is a high
rating for flexibility something to do with it?

I've got a similar problem with Conference level players. One is an
AMRC. When I play him in the middle behind the strikers he always has
a stinker getting 2 or 3 until he gets an assist or scores (which is
why I play him there) at which point it rockets up to 7 and 8. He then
whinges he is being treated unfairly and wants a transfer.

Another is an AM L. I have had to rearrange my formation to
accommodate him and if he doesn't get any action he scores poorly and
then bitches about being played out of position.

The latest one is a SC. When he is up for it and on form he plays a
blinder. When he is having a quiet day he gets frustrated and "furious
with the referee" and the defenders for trying to tackle him. To try
and stop him from getting a silly yellow or card I took him off the
front line to play a bit deeper behind a different strike force for
the last 15 minutes of a game. Now he has been bitching for a month
about being played out of position despite me going public praising
his performance.

At times it is almost real, dealing with these "personalities".
