I am going to be building a computer for a friend and I've narrowed down the video cards to ATI 9600pro or the GeforceFX 5600 ultra. Which card would be best for his system? he doesn't like to overclock. he does play 3-d games.

his system
Abit NF7-S v2.0
Generic 450W PSU
AMD XP 2600
Corsair PC3200 2x256MB

Remember, there are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

The 5600U will probably be faster in DX8 games, the 9600P will definately be faster in DX9 games.

Here's the thing: The 9600P will be "fast enough" in DX8 games, but the 5600U might NOT be fast enough in DX9 games! Now game makers are comming out with "patches" that will turn down certain quality settings in order to allow FX cards to limp allong at relatively smooth frame rates in DX9. Think of this like the "limp home mode" built into automotive computers when a certain component fails: it gets you home, but you won't like the ride!

Captain Obvious points to the Obvious Choice!

The R9600pro and FX5600ultra are about equal with old DirectX8 games, but the FX has been proven to run DirectX9 poorly compared to the R.

Good choice.
Considering that the fan of the 5600U is quite noiser than that of the ATi9600p.

Better to be applied in Half Life 2.

Definately get the 9600 Pro. You'll regret it later if you don't. I'm glad to see that you probably will get this card. Its a really good card for the money.

My OS features preemptive multitasking, a fully interactive command line, & support for 640K of RAM!

Try to get a 9500pro if you can, it's better than the 9600pro.

-Intel PIV 2.4C @ 3.84G -Asus P4P800 -OCZ Copper 2x256 4000EL memory @ 275mhz 3-4-4-8 -Sapphire 9800pro @ 490/780 -SB audigy -80G Maxtor Diamond Plus9 Ultra ATA-133 hdd -450 Enermax PSU

It is highly unlikely that there will be a mobile R9600XT. There are currently the R9600 and R9600Pro, but they aren't all that availible right now. I would think that there may be a refresh, but it will likely come much later. The R9600Pro should be the king for a good while, and is likely 'good enough' for the time being, and one heck of a step up from the M9 series, nd from the FXGO.
