Upgrade from Ti4600

I am considering upgrading my graphics card. I have a Ti4600 128. I am hoping to get a noticable increase in performance for gaming, something similar to when I upgraded from my GF2 GTS 32 to my current Ti4600. I am running a P4 2.53 533 on an Asus P4PE with 512DDR. I play mostly FPS, driving sim games and some RTS. Are there any cards out there that will give me a real visual difference right across the board, not just better stats on 3d mark software.

Trust me, you will see a noticeable increase in your rendering speed. How much did you pay for that Ti4600? There was one lucky dude that found one for $80 from a co-worker. But if your paying the regular market price for these borads, then you will be better off going with a Radeon 9600 Pro.

I paid nearly full price for the Ti4600 when I got it. It was the fastest card at the time and had only been around about 3 weeks.

Oh, I misread your post. I thought you were upgrading from a GeForce2 GTS to a Ti4600. I'm still groggy from waking up, sorry about that.

If you have a Ti4600, I wouldn't bother upgrading yet. Wait until the new games come out. If you don't like the performance of your card at that point, then and only then would I upgrade from a Ti4600. THe Ti4600 gets repsectable framerates in both HL2 (DX8 mode) & Doom III.

Radeon 9600Pro will give him the quality difference but in term of frame rates i think ti4600 has more raw power.

The Ti4600 is a good card and I doubt even the best card available won't offer something similar to the huge difference you experienced between the Geforce2 and the Geforce4 Ti.

This is because the human eye can only discern 70 FPS or so, so if a new card goes 200 FPS you can't really see a difference in raw speed.

It's possible to notice a huge difference with new cards if you use antialiassing alot, though, because framerates are so low with FSAA enabled.

If you want to double your framerates using, say, 4x FSAA, you could buy a 9700 PRO or better... 9800, 9800 PRO, or 9800 XT.

Thanks Cleeve, this confirms what I was thinking. I do run my games at 1024 x 768 with everything turned up to the max. I use an Iiyama VM PRO 451 19" monitor and sometimes think it would be nice to run my games at a higher res without suffering a hit. The Ti4600 also does not seem to offer good 2D display at higher res. I hear the Radeon cards fair better....

I'm running the TI4600 & I'm not changing until at least HL 2 & Doom 3 are out. That will be at least 1 generation from now, if not 2.

UFO, a TI4600 for $80 is a friggen steal. I saw that post myself. I got mine on rebate & still paid $249.

Dazzle them with Brilliance, or Baffle them with BS!

I'd say wait. There is really very little to justify an upgrade at this time.

Wait til the game that kills your system (and runs signiificantly better on a newer card) actually hits stores or hits your PC, before deciding to upgrade.

I'd think the RV380 sounds about right, but it's a few months off.
