Don't beleive me, I couldn't beleive it myself? Yes, I know its another lame HL2 thread. But I think y'all outta look into this one. Tell me what y'all think.

We were going to hold off on reporting on this until there was official word from Valve, but now Slashdot is reporting (by way of GamersWithJobs) that at least some of the Half-Life 2 source code has leaked.

There is the Half Life 2 source code floating around the net right now. It looks to be about a month old. There's no official word from Valve on the source code leak yet. Unfortunately those who want to use it to cheat already have it, we need to get the word to legitimate customers to educate them about the situation.

A lot of people are making crazy speculations based on the source code, I wouldn't pay much attention to these rumors. We'll have more on this as soon as we hear official word.

<b>UPDATE:</b> Just to clarify, this hasn't been confirmed as legitimate just yet, but we tend to think this isn't a hoax. On the bright side, since this leak is just source code, there is no actual game art or content. Nobody can compile this and suddenly have Half-Life 2 or anything like that.

<b>UPDATE2:</b> We can now say with pretty much absolute certainty that this is indeed real and not a hoax.

It's most likely legit. Even GSI Fragmaster @ Planet Half-Life says so.

But to make absolutely certain, its best to wait for Valve's word on the issue like you were hintin at.

Here's the proof your looking for:

Gabe Confirms Half-Life 2 Source Leak  2 Comments
10/2/2003 14:21 PST | Half-Life 2 | by Fragmaster
Valve's Gabe Newell has confirmed the Half-Life 2 source code link in this forum post. Here's what he had to say:
Ever have one of those weeks? This has just not been the best couple of days for me or for Valve.
Yes, the source code that has been posted is the HL-2 source code.

Here is what we know:

1) Starting around 9/11 of this year, someone other than me was accessing my email account. This has been determined by looking at traffic on our email server versus my travel schedule.
2) Shortly afterwards my machine started acting weird (right-clicking on executables would crash explorer). I was unable to find a virus or trojan on my machine, I reformatted my hard drive, and reinstalled.
3) For the next week, there appears to have been suspicious activity on my webmail account.
4) Around 9/19 someone made a copy of the HL-2 source tree.
5) At some point, keystroke recorders got installed on several machines at Valve. Our speculation is that these were done via a buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane. This recorder is apparently a customized version of RemoteAnywhere created to infect Valve (at least it hasn't been seen anywhere else, and isn't detected by normal virus scanning tools).
6) Periodically for the last year we've been the subject of a variety of denial of service attacks targetted at our webservers and at Steam. We don't know if these are related or independent.

Well, this sucks.

What I'd appreciate is the assistance of the community in tracking this down. I have a special email address for people to send information to, helpvalve@valvesoftware.com. If you have information about the denial of service attacks or the infiltration of our network, please send the details. There are some pretty obvious places to start with the posts and records in IRC, so if you can point us in the right direction, that would be great.

We at Valve have always thought of ourselves as being part of a community, and I can't imagine a better group of people to help us take care of these problems than this community.

So please, if you can, help Valve out!
At the date that I am posting this comment, the New Item is on Planet Halflife's Home Page:

Oh I imagine getting ahold of the Sourcecode is going to be even more difficult than getting ahold of the DOOM ]|[ leaked Demo. I've tried some of the FIle sharing programs, but no matter what, it'll download at a fricken' slow 7 KBPS or so, and that REALLY sucks. I want to play leaked Doom3 SOOOOOOOOO badly too. Now, especially that DOOM ]|[, HL2, and the HL2 benchmark all seem to be delayed.

this is MUCH WORSE than the doom3 alpha.

this is the engine code, worth several million dollars, work of several years by tons of people. this is incomparable how that hurts valve now.

oh, and its not just the hl2 source.. this will start a new flood of hacking stream, hl2, hl, cs, etc.. and all the stuff.

i feel very sorry for valve.

Sorry to tout this out but LaGrande would have prevented the malicious code transfer from occurring. Things like this are very sad but Gabe is partially to blame as well. The sign's were there they should have locked the network down and tried to figure out what was happening. Alas it happened and there isn’t much we can do than try and watch out for hack sites claiming they have the source.

If I was into conspiracies I would say nVidia did this to see what’s up or someone that has interests in nVidia, but I am not into conspiracies so…

They should have had all their computers that were dedicated to the project locked onto a Local Area Network or a Mainframe with NO internet access, period. To answer emails, and respond to forums and all the other neccessary web activity would have been best done on a dedicated standalone internet computer.

Yeah I mean what the hell are valve thinking of having their code on a pc thats connected to the internet ROFLMAO!!! They deserve everything they get for this... Even if its just to learn a lesson. OMG I still can't believe how stupid that is, especially these days with all the hax00rs about...

**Gets back to playing Jedi Academy and GP4**

P.S its not that bad really, because whoever has the code, the moment thay brag about it or sell it or use it, whatever, is most likely when they will be caught, (if they aint been had already that is). Anyway I remember doom code was leaked in 1997 and nothing bad came from it?

this sucks.... seems like the leak could have been the reason for the delay... Valve most likely will have to recode part of half life 2 like steam and other portions to prevent hackor tools.
