I just received a copy of Cube Quest...

Can someone please confirm that the manual was just a plain paper
photocopy?

As far as I know, yes. The one that I had
also was a cheezy photocopy. Doesn't make
much sense when you consider the trouble
put into the box. What do you think of the
game?

I'll check mine out, can't remember... it's not really a game is it... jus
ta tech demo really, but one that is an 'original' so has some kind of
value.

Not one you'll put on more than once!

Ah ok, thanks George. I was beginning to wonder if this
was the old seller trick I was the victim off ;)

And no it doesn't make sense. Nicely printed box and have your
manual printed on toilet paper.

Ah well, it adds to the image of an unfinished demo-ish concept
of what would be a pretty boring game anyway imo. I still have
to give it a thorough look, but nor the concept or the way it
looks invited me to do so yet. But then again, I never liked turn-based
strategy games very much, in whatever form.

It's a nice collectable though. I think I find the pcb the most
interesting part. I don't think they had that made especially for
the release of this proof of concept (thinking of the manual and
lack of overlay and looking at the unused eeprom holes). It looks like a
proto of the production pcb's to me. Very similar, but without the break-
off edges,

Kind regards,

ps Good luck with your auction ;)

I was really not impressed with Cube Wars (it's original demo name,
they tweaked the name to Cube Quest to resemble it's extremely rare
arcade counterpart).

It was only AFTER I placed my order that they revealed the game was a
'demo', A very scummy tactic that now I'm very wary of when an old
proto surfaces that they want to make as an 'exclusive' at some con.

This 'game' should have been donated as part of the original Smith
Engineering library, like the bugfixed Berzerk and the proto Polar
Rescue. Heck, even Tour de France (which I believe someone paid a lot
for) was donated. Cube Wars should have been made available to Mark
Shaker to make repros.

Sorry if I'm grousing too much about this, but when the game I paid $40
for has deceptive errors on the packaging (mentions overlay) a cheap
manual, and shitty packaging -- the glue on my box has come apart and
I've had to reglue it several times -- I tend to be a bit miffed.

Ironic then, that this turd ends up going for even more mucho bucks on
ebay nowadays.

Yes, I thoght Cube Quest was overpriced.
I also don't like the false overlay statement
on the packaging. I think that they originally
intended to include an overlay, but didn't do
their homework before having the packages
printed (as to the high price of overlay creation).
I also wonder how much they were planning on
charging had an overlay been included. Protector
was in the area of $40 with box and overlay
(before shipping costs). I also didn't enjoy
playing Cube Quest. I personally feel that it was
very cruel for the publisher/distributor to do this
to Vectrex fans.

Strike this last paragraph by the way as it is nonsense. Nothing special
about the pcb. Standard repro.

It's hard to tell what really happened,
but I did find Sean's comment from this
newsgroup:

Actually, I thought that came about becuase they used scans of
original boxes to create the CQ box, and no one thought to remove the
overlay comment on the box...

them, 200 of which were sold at the expo and the remaining 50 were sold
mail order after the show. There was some talk of selling the bare
cart (possibly the bare board) without the box and manual if there was
demand for it but I don't think that ever happened.

I see, thanks. At least it's collectable then :)
