Rumors of big performance boosts, maybe openGL tweaks... but thats the case with all speculation.

Groundless claims and unsubstantiated rumors :)

I read an interview that said there will me very little in the way of increased performance, but many new features.

They hinted that you will be able to assign each game individual IQ settings (FSAS, anistropic, etc)

------------------
Radeon 9500 (modded to PRO w/8 pixel pipelines)
AMD AthlonXP 2400+ (O/C to 2600+ with 143 fsb)
3dMark03: 3586

Even if they did have performance increases, I don't think they can get my Radeon 8500 LE to go any faster.

It's not how fast your computer is, it's how much you get done on it.

Now THAT's a feature that I can really appreciate. Sometimes I just don't bother with FSAA & AF because some of my games will work well with it, & other don't. Other games will work well with sort of a medium AF & FSAA option. It gets really annoying to adjust the control panel every time you want to game, so In the past I have just left it set to "Application Preference" & there's an AF selection in game. Otherwise I don't use it. I just LOVE the slider bar for Ansiotropic Filtering in Jedi Academy.

My OS features preemptive multitasking, a fully interactive command line, & support for 640K of RAM!

I like the 8500LE card. I had one. I very relucantly sold that card to my Grandfather who needed a Graphics Card Replacement.

I recall with Catalyst 3.7 they put a screen rotate option in the ATI control panel. Very useful because my flat panel also rotates 90 degrees. Good for word documents.....

Do I really need a card that runs games at 100 fps when flat panels only run at about 45 hz?

no. The refresh rate may be set at 85 in windows on a flat panel, but actually running at 45 due to slow pixel fade.

The pixel fading, which is rated in miliseconds, is NOT the refresh rate. What monitor are you using? Most flat panels today can do 75hz. When it says 75hz, guess what, its at 75hz. Response time (or "pixel fading") is a different factor, although still important. Most flat panels sold today have either 16, 20, or 25ms response times. This means it takes (for example) 25 miliseconds for a pixel to go from black, to white, to black again.

But as we know, these ratings are far too conservative, and in reality it's often much higher than touted. Bah, to me, an LCD is simply not worth it. Far from being it yet. CRT all the way.

Yes, to me the CRTs display output is much less strenuous on the eyes than the LCD based monitors.

LCDs only hurt my eyes because they are usually much brighter than CRTs.

LCD frequences start at 60Hz

I asked Terry if CATALYST 3.8 is still on track for Wednesday, since many people on Rage3D are quite anxious to see this CATALYST update. Here is what he said:

"Yes we are 100% on track for Wednesday. As a matter of fact I can even tell you what time we expect to post.... 3 pm EST is when they should be live. Also we have talked to numerous web sites about the drivers and expect a few articles to come up at that time as well."
So, only 2 more days till your able to get these yourself. Hopefully this will keep most of you satisfied until then!

Captain Obvious says they use the ms fate time to determine the quasi refresh rate!

The Captain gives the following example: 20ms = 20x10^-3 seconds. 1/20x10^-3 = 50Hz.

Captain Obvious says that the concept of 'refresh' with a LCD is fundamentally different to that of a CRT!

Lets hope they realease a driver update for the Fire GL X2 series, because by god these drivers suck ass in Maya. I can't even render a damn sphere and a plane, let alone an actual scene... I knew I should have stayed with Nvidia, ATI POS.

I don't think the consumer game card drivers coincide release with the workstation market, but I could be wrong. I've been trying to get a hold of ATI support for the past 4 hours, god knows when the one support tech for Fire GL's will get off the phone.
