I can't view streaming clips off the net unless they are microsoft media player streams. I was wondering how come my java video applets never load and are always marked off with the infamous red X. Also chat applets don't load. Can anyone help me?

Try installing the <A HREF="http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html" target="_new">Sun Java plug-in</A>. This is the "brand" that will supposedly be released in the next service pack for WinXP. Neither WinXP nor the latest version of the first service pack (SP1a) contain a recent version of the MS Virtual Machine, due to lawsuits.

It's really weird, Toe... because I could have sworn they worked before with XP and SP1.

*Shrug*

Ah well, I've installed the Sun Java plugin at home and haven't had any problems since. Even those Java games that someone said wouldn't run with Sun's plugin work.

Not so weird, really ... the first version of the service pack <i>did</i> have the Virtual Machine. In fact, if you already have it installed, you can still get a fairly recent update for the MSVM through Windows Update. You just can't download it as a individual download from the web site ... you'd have to search and try to find it elsewhere (which is not an easy proposition, since most of the web sites I found just posted links to the VM at Windows Update, before SP1a was released, so all of those links are "dead".)

I have both the Sun and the MS version, and when I update a new version of WinXP (for those people who want it) I still install SP1 and the Sun plug-in, so the users can switch between the two (if they wish) under the Advanced tab of the browser's Internet Properties.

You may still be able to find build 3805 as a single download (from an unaffiliated site), but the last time I searched, I only found one site that had a newer version, such as build 3810. I couldn't begin to tell you where that was at this point, and I didn't even bother to install the file ... I just kept using the Sun plug-in. The search wasn't even worth the effort.
