The theft of part of its source code has delayed until April 2004 the launch of Half Life II, the hotly anticipated alien-hunting game of Vivendi Universal Games. "A third of the source code was stolen. It's serious because it forces us to delay the launch of the game by at least four months, that is to April 2004. Just the time to rewrite parts of the game." You gotta be kidding me. I thought they said LEAKED not stolen from them!

Man right now if I found who did it, I'd just wanna strangle him until he turns blue, then completely dead.
I can't beleive some people would do such. WTF are they happy about? Making the game not come out?!

Ah man you have no idea how this affects future game releases. If it can happen to a top company like valve and possibly the most popular game ever, just imagine how other developers feel..... And whats to stop them from doing it again in 6 months time (unless they keep it out of the loop completely)...

Valve was naive at leaving computers involved in the development process exposed to the internet. They should have known that with all those dedicated hackers out there, the chance of their computers get hacked is very high...

Anyway, i cant stop but to wonder if Nvidia hired hackers to hjack valve's codes in return to force them into recoding and delay the game long enough for NV40.

"Cough, cough" The above statement is ENTIRELY my initial thought when i saw the news about source codes leaked...
October 7, 2003 5:19:49 PM

Or maybe Nvidia threatened valve by saying that they will drop support in their drivers for HL2 so they made it all up.
Or maybe Nvidea threatened to take them to court so they made it all up.
Or maybe Aliens hacked the servers as part of an experiment to see how us hum0ns react.

TBH no one knows exactly why or who hacked the server. I go with the alien experiment theory personally!

What they mean by stole is some1 took it form their pc and then deleted it so they dont have it anymore? No backups nada?
Other than that they could still release the game with 1/3 of the source code on the loose...

Anyway unless they really dont have it anymore I dont know why the game would be delayed.
What about 9800XT's buyer? will they receive the game when the R420 will be there or around the corner?
That sux0r all DX9 title gone for holidays =(

Today's release of a playable version of the game brings Vivendi's comments from earlier today into question. Ramboz told Reuters "a third of the source code was stolen". However, with the stolen game now out, it's possible a more complete version of the source code was taken.

And the plot thickens....

My brother got one of our WON IDs banned from a DoD server called "Heart of Dixieland" for accidentally TKing 3 people at the same time. I'm pissed with whoever did it to him, ITS NOT FAIR! I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who agrees that ban choices are often ill-made.

October 7, 2003 10:26:19 PM

I'm still a little bit skeptical about this article, but indeed IGN featured the same report, and Reuters confirmed it. A friend of mine said, however, that the hacker(s) only succeeded in downloading an older build of the graphics engine only. Gabe Newell said on Saturday that the hacker(s) got the source tree for the program on 9/19. WTF is going on and can anybody verify that all this is absolutely true? How could Valve possibly have allowed for such a huge fiasco? Looks like I might decide to wait on that 9800...
October 7, 2003 10:29:30 PM

Yep. And I only got banned because I killed a regular who knows some guys with the rcon password. I never even cheated or tkd or anything. So I posted in the forums, sent emails to admins and made sure his friends got their passwords removed.

I don't like bullies, and this is just one example of a guy who spends too much time on his computer and not enough time enjoying life.

I personally, don't think that DOOM ]|[ will be as awesome as Half-Life 2, but the version you played was the Alpha, and far from complete. Wait until the game comes out before you engrave your judgements in stone.

Well I've had a day and a half to wait and return to the internet, and based on reports from PlanetHalfLife, things seem to be that much more ambiguous. Anonymous sources are claiming that they have all of the code and they're threatening to release it if Valve doesn't come forward to admit that the game is nowhere near completion. The problem is that none of this information is substantial because, well, this is the internet after all, so we should wait until Valve Software comes forward with an official explanation, posted on an official website, as to what exactly happened and whether the game is still shipping in November. Random information seems to imply that there was some damage, some loss of code, that occurred on their system. But Gabe Newell said yesterday that only a small portion of the code was taken, hopefully meaning that it was only copied and not erased as well. If the game is truthfully delayed because of the leak, then I would like to send a very special F*CK YOU to the idiots who are trying to ruin what Valve has dedicated FIVE YEARS of their lives to creating. And I would also like to commend Valve Software for allowing this to happen, even more if they actually did misrepresent release dates.
October 9, 2003 6:53:15 AM

Fark'n typical... I quit playing Half-Life / Counter-Strike because of all the cheats in it.

Cry Baby: "Oh, you killed me, you must be cheating."
Me: "No, I aimed the crosshair at you."

I was so looking forward to half-Life 2 to start clean and fresh, and get back into on-line multiplayer. And, what happens? Someone forgot the address to windowsupdate.microsoft.com, and now Half-Life 2 is going to have cheat's 4 months before its release! That's just great...
