Any of you getting pretty lame performance in Halo PC?

I dont understand why I get such low framerate at 1024x768 with only 2x aa. With vsync or w/o, the game seems to crawl whenever a few monsters are on screen. The game doesn't appear as graphically intense as Unreal 2/Call of Duty, which run much much smoother.
I mean, it runs better on an xbox which you all know is only a P3 733 and Geforce3-ish system.
Here I am seeing such weak performance on an A7N8X 2700+, 9700np
I dun get it :(

I'll go get cat 3.8 and see if that helps any ....

45fps is average on a 3.2ghz p4 and 9800pro. 38fps with a 2.8ghz pc and 9700pro. You have a 2700xp and a 9700np which should be getting over 34fps average but nothing spectacular at 1024x768. Halo is badly coded and should not be played on anything less than a 2.8ghz p4/3000xp and 9700pro with any kind of AA IMO...

Ouch. If you need that kind of hardware to get good play that cuts out a bit of the market. I'm still curious about giving it a try though. Also, one must remember not to try to directly equate a console's specs with what is needed on a desktop. Because they know exactly what they are writing for they tend to be able to get more for less, if you get my meaning. Ports tend to go up in specs because all of a sudden you have to start worrying about ati/vs nvidia, eax sound, and all sorts of other stuff.

Well, if it helps, I'm playing through it on a CELERON 1.1 oc'd to 1.4 with 512MB of PC 133 ram! with a 9600Pro. I'm running it at 1024x768 with low to medium details on, and I'm getting acceptable frames for what my system is worth. The frames arent spectacular, but I can take on lot's of enemies and not have it chug on me. Although I agree, it is a poorly coded game.

As each day goes by, I hug my 9600Pro just a little tighter.

Remember that according to Anand (see I found something in the review I COULD use), when enabling the AA hack on cards, it causes the loss of PS2.0 effects. Try running it without AA.

Just a thought. It may even look better.

ALSO, speed, when I get it, and I intend to (as long as it's not obscenely priced), I'll let you know how it runs on my system with an XP2000+ and 512mb of PC3200 (running at 333) as a comparison. Just don't expect anything any time SOON. Too busy with work/school.

Cool. I'm currently out of work (don't know if thats a good thing or a bad thing lol) so I have a lot of time on my hands. Gonna buy Halo tomorrow and let you guys know how it performs on my 9700 barton system. I'll run it at 2200mhz (11x200 3200 speeds) and 9700 @ stock speeds to see if its smooth at 1024x768.... Then I'll run it at my ub0r overclock speeds of 2405mhz (12x200 3400 equiv) and 9700 @ 9800pro speeds and see if it makes a diff ( as if it won't lol).

Just finished playing Halo pc, fun game, fun story. I may not understand much about the coding and hardware ect but this game seems to be running far worse then it should be, infact id like to rant about it now.
It looks nice, but i didnt see it offering much more eyecandy over games such as UT2003. The only thing halo seemed to do differnt was a lot more bumpmapping and nicer looking water.
Now what pissed me off what the fact halo does not suport FSAA, and if you wanted to turn FSAA on you had to disable many of the pixel shading effect such as the pretty water. i dont know [-peep-] about coding but i can name a million other games that allow the pixel shading effects and have no problems with FSAA at the same time. Also, halo runs great on most systems at low resolutions like 640x480 and 800x600, this what it prolly ran at on the xbox so i guess i can understand that but. But without fsaa these low resolutions are unbearable for me.
I ofcourse elected to disable all the effects and go with FSAA which lead to a few other interesting things. Turning off the effects allowed the game to run at 1280x1024 with 4x FSAA fairly well for me. I also noticed the bumpmapping with the FSAA on seemed far more pronounced, being better or worse may depend on whos seeing it but i liked it more myself.

I conclude halo is a great game everyone should play at least once, but was ported to PC by monkeys or maybe chipmunks.

Sex is like a card game, if you dont have a good partner you had better have a good hand.

What card did you run Halo on?

Funy thing is HALO was initially intended to be on the MACs first then other platforms, that is until MS bought it. I'd love to see what it was supposed to look like on the APPLEs. It's like a port of a port now.

Good game is academy. But too short! I completed it and thought there was more. I wanted to be the guardian of the galaxy FFS! LOL

Now I'm waiting for knights of the old republic!

I also get low fps in that game.

Athlon XP2700+ @ 190x12 2280mhz
Radeon 9700pro @ 380/340

1024x768 all details on high no MSAA.

Outside Fps is decent 50-60fps
Inside in some rooms 40-75fps
But with alot of enemies on certain maps it will dip into the teens.

I'm hoping a update to either the game or Catalyst driver will increase performance. I will try with pixel shaders 1.4 and drop the settings to see if it helps.

So far, it looks like a badly coded port!

That is with Cat 3.8

Well its not as bad as I thought it would be. At 2200mhz (3200 speeds) and 9700pro at stock it was playable inside and silky smooth outide, although the inside bits chug along sometimes. At 2400mhz and 9700pro @ 370/340 its always over 25fps inside and super fast outside. Not that bad really but you need the hardware for it (3000xp 9700np minimum for 1024x768 really....

WOW this game looks awesome! Especially the vehicles. Nothing revolutionary but pretty good for over a year old if you ask me. If only it came out on time and wasn't a system hog.... The levels blend very well together too. Top stuff....
