The OMEGAs are actually CAT 3.8.x+?

Just saw <A HREF="http://www.driverheaven.net/#article_7247" target="_new">THIS</A> at DriverHeaven; The Omega's Aren't quite Cat 3.9 but are <i>'newer than the CAT 3.8'</i> (meaning like we expected he's probably getting to see advanced releases of CATs [explains the speed of the Latest Omegas]), but they do have added ATI features above the regular CAT 3.8

I've put off downloading the OMEGAs while testing the new CATs, I think I'll switch back to the OMEGAs tonight/tomorrow.

Interesting (well at least to me you wet blankets out there  )!

I'm getting random missing textures in OpenGL with the current Omega Drivers (but I'm using the Win9x/ME version). It doesn't happen all the time. In fact, it's very rare. However, occassionally I get areas of the screen that are just white or black triangles instead of textures.

Haven't seen any problems in Direct3D, yet.

One thing I noticed with these drivers is in older games 1600x1200 seems much faster than I've seen before. In the past I couldn't even play games at 1600x1200 because it was too laggy on my old Radeon 8500. Now I can play MOHAA at 1600x1200 with all the settings at max and it plays smoothly. Strange.

One more thing, Omega and friends finally added options for the 9500->9700 hack and 9700->9800 hack (I think that's the one) to the Win9X/Me version of the Omega Drivers. The overclocking options have been added as well. Until now these options were exclusive to the NT/2K/XP version.

The Omega drivers look beautiful as always (except for the noted problem).

<b>56K, slow and steady does not win the race on internet!</b>

Well I just added them to my Rig, and no problems yet.

The new ones are supposed 'LEAKED' drivers (that ATI has tried to quash [is this different than an HL2 D<i>]|[</i> leak?]) So I guess Omega isn't getting TOO much inside info. If hh did get an advance copy of the Cat 3.8 from Catalyst Maker or someone, I can't help but feel this may jeopardize that relationship.

In the Readme it says if you are experiencing crashes disable VPU recovery (which is a native ATI feature I like)

They have added BLUR , 'EXTREME' BLUR , EMBOSS and CONTOUR to the OGL shader effects. Why not gimme Sketch on DX Dang it!

The Tool Bars and Program Start bar have stylized Omega logos (that's new)

Anywhoo, if this costs me VPU recovery I may decide to switch back to regular CATs. I'll have to run things and see.

I seem to be having Cursor issues, but I'm gonna replace the battery on my Logitech Trackman first before deciding.

Yep, and I replaced the Battery in my Logitech and it's definitely not the Omegas, everything works fine now. Schtoopid batteries!

I thought cordless would be great but the old version just doesn't have the range (I can only get about 6ft from the base).

Can't wait for the Logitech to come out with a Bluetooth version like MS (I will not buy MS stuff!).

Anywhoo, back to the original, yes the 'new' omega's are out. Just a slight tweak it seems. I'm still worried about the potential loss of VPU recovery, but until I have that problem, then I'll ride these Omegas.

I still prefer the look and feel of Rage3Dtweak, but I have come to like the Omegas performance, and since I nly use the control panel every once in a while the Omegas are the way to go for me.

You can install them on a ti4200 based system?

Seriously dude, The ATI Omegas don't WORK on your card. Try the nVidia one's I know they won't run on my R9600P, so maybe they work on yours.

I just tried the smartshader effects on alot of things.

Just ran 3Dmk01 with a few of them.
RGB Cycle mayde me sick
Inverse Colour is kinda interesting
But I still think B&W stylised is the best, especially in the truck chase. Sometimes like in HyPoly it just looked like a b&W screen, no highlights.

As for them not taking a performance hit, I wonder how 3Dmk calculates scores. I did notice these difference (all else being equal)

No Effect: 10844 Inverse: 10271 RGB: Didn't complete B&W Stylised: 9637

I ran all the OGL effects on Vulpine and I like the Sketch and the ASCII effects, but don't know if they would be useful. Sharpen seemed to make the benchmark look better (I didn't run it to completion once so no scores), the blur effect didn't seem to serve much use for me. Would be nice as a 'blinding' effect in a game, but can't see playing a whole game like that.

I tried the D3D effects on the Will Rock, Rave Shield demos, and Morrowind. I still think morrowind looks best au natural. Will Rock looked good with b&W stylised. B&W_S looked good with raven shield but made it really hard to tell friend from foe. Waiting for the name to come up in a specific colour means YOU DEAD! I did LOOK great the reticle was nice and red on a B&W background. If everything that moved was bad then this would be perfect (Single-Player Halo comes to mind). Inverse wasn't too bad, but did wash out some good cues.

MAJOR problem I encounteed with these OMEGAs. For the FIRST time ever I had to turn off FAST-WRITES in order to keep games from crashing. I never had to do that before (yes before I did switch it from the default to on [cause my MOBO is suposed to support it and it didn't cause problems before], well that's over). It only crashed Raven Shield but it crashed that about 2 seconds into gameplay (and a hell of a hard crash, Audio Lock-UP/SPIKES, no monitor out and a bunch of other things [tried ~10 times]). Once FrastWrites was off, no problem, and I could cycle through the shader effects without issue.

Anywhoo, they seem ok sofar, and the fastwrites thing seems to be a common occurance, and isn't supposed to make THAT much difference. Happy for now.

Hey I want the Overdrive TOO, only comes with the new cards Ba$tardz! I also want the thermal monitoring stuff. Well I guess I'll get that on the R420/RV380.

So you still looking for an R9600? The XT DOES look sweet!

hmmm interesting.

i found that with serious sam the B&W sketch one sucked an exorbident number of fps out of the game...

so much so it was hovering at 45fps instead of above 85 (vsynch on at 85).

still fun to play with :D

and ah heck the overdrive...
my card is in overdrive mode all the time

<b>I help because you suck</b>

The hing that gets me is the first guy is running an R9000Pro, the older cards really aren't the target. I'm serious about this, unified drivers suck if we focus on the people using older/cheaper cards. Sorry if that sounds elitist, but if I spend more expect more, I know that my R9000non-pro will work just about as good with the drivers that shipped with it as with the new CATs, and in many cases beter. I expect that, just like I expected nothing new with the Rage Series I had after the Radeons came out.
I would prefer a refresh of once a month or so for the top cardz, and once every 3-4 months for the older cardz. But tha's just my personal gripe.

The third guy is talking about overdrive and I think he's confused radlinker with overdrive. Especially if he doesn't have an R9XXX XT.

As for the first guy I never thought of that. I found it to actually detract from raven shield and got me killed FAST. I think the guy is right and it may give him an unfair advanatage, but it really only hurts the Campers IMO. But yeah, I never thought of THAT kinda cheat. Stylised made the reticle look realy bright red againt the B&W background, but didn't make it easier to kill people (actually the opposite really). I like it in the Will Rock Demo where you din't need to distinguish friend/foe.

I have to say for the most part I agreee that the shader effects are not a 'major' improvement and are really just a 'neato' option that will get somewhat tired quickly.

But if i revives the fun in some games for some people, then all the beter. I do wish Sketch and ASCII worked on DX9 games as that's likely the only 2 I'd use.

Anyoo, that's my view from the cheap seats.

The emboss is really cool too. (I have those Omega 3.8.5s, no probs with them.) Some of the other new effects were cool too, like uh, contour and whats that other similar looking one? They did help in sof2 and I think they could be considered a semi-hack. The image was kept mostly the same so u could still see contrast and color, and depth, but people (and things, any edges) were outlined. I could see people really far away and shoot at them accurately (well, slightly more accurately than I normally do, which is pretty damn accurately!:))
But I think theyre KICK ASS and the whole idea is KICK ASS, but some of the effects in the 3.8.5s don't work 100% correctly, so hopefully the cat. 3.9s will have more properly working effects, and if possible increased speed when using them. Some definately slow things down, like sketch.

I used it in Dungeon Siege...yea yea its old but i have it installed on my puter still.

anyhow... everyone of the worked. but all of them had the same bug, and every setting, i could come up with.

everywhere the MOUSE goes i get a BOX around it in the ORIGINAL COLOURS.

Can anyone tell me why?

ASUS P4S8X - P4 2.4B - 2 x 512M DDR333 - ATI 9500 Pro(Sapphire) - WD 80G HD (8M Buffer) - SAMSUNG SV0844D 8G HD - LG 16X DVD - Yamaha F1 CDRW - Iomega Zip 250 int.

Omega has posted a revised version 'a' to fix a few minor bugs.

If you are experiencing TV-out issues be sure to download the 2.4.96a drivers. Otherwise it seems like minor fixes/removal.

Once again Omega's site: <A HREF="http://www.omegacorner.com" target="_new">http://www.omegacorner.com</A>
