Upgrading TI4200

The rule of thumb:

Never, EVER buy new hardware until there is something you want to do RIGHT NOW, but can't.

If all the games you play run just fine on your 4200, don't upgrade. If you want to upgrade for Half-Life 2 or Doom3, buy the video card when they are released... because hardware will be cheaper and better then.

But if there are games you're playing now, and the framerates are less than you find playable, the $200 range will get you a 9700 non-pro (if you can find 'em, going fast) or even a 9800 non-pro. (unless it has an "SE" in the name. Stay away from Ati cards with SE!!!!)

The 9600XT looks to be a great card, but either of these (9700 or 9800) will be better than a 9600XT.

Probably in a few months time Ati and Nvidia will release new generation of video cards. If you can wait then do this. Then you will either be able to get one of those new beauties or get one of those avaible today for lower prices.

The 9600XT hasnt even made it into the hands of reviewers yet, word is ATi is waiting for Nvidia to release the FX5700 so they have a card to counter with.

Right now I have a Ti4200 128Mb and honestly it doesn't even flinch when I run Splinter Cell or Call of Duty if I keep the FSAA/AS low. Even the Doom 3 Alpha (ahem) ran surprisingly fast in certain areas. With the delay in Half Life 2, for me at least, there's no reason to upgrade. Save your money until there's a serious DX9 game that you want to play. By then the hardware prices will be lower.
