One of the VERY best FX5700/5950 Reviews IMO.

Once again Digit-Life has a GREAT review of the new cards. Complete with memory closups, hardware deconstruction, benchmarks and IQ comparisons. Hmm, someone mentioned IQ issues in Toms review, and it seems the FX's have some too (check Halo and RtoCW), ATI STILL has the Rightmark bug w/ Cat 3.8.

BTW, there is also HL2 Benchies and IQ screenies.

Yeah, well I was sure you were going to get to it, based on what you said yesterday. I was so busy at work no time to read or write/post.

Sleep in? YOU... You... you....!

I Had to wake up @ 4:30 to get to work for 6am! Argh!

I still have soo many too read... and nothing to wear!

So you interested in replacing the GF4 with an FX5700 or R9600P/XT, or are you gonna wait for the RV380 and it's competition? Or the R42X or NV40?

Well you coulg always get one with the 9100IGP, and then you wouldn't need an Add-in card, you'd have ALL the power of an R9200, but intergrated at your disposal and sucking system memory!

OOooohh Feel the POWA!

Thinking of a new CPU too?

I'm still looking at the Gigabyte mobos (not as hard as a new T-Pad), but no longer the 7NNXP, I'm looking at the GA-K8NNXP and GA-8KVNXP. Supposedly the Nforce3 has an issue (still haven't read to much about it) so I would probably go with the VIA powered K8VNXP if I were making a desktop investment.

Ooops started slipping into the Mobo forum. Well I did mention Inergated Graphics!

I thought they were just Delayed. You mean the early released ones in Japan? Yeah I heard there was an USB issue, but didn't know they got recalled.

its interesting that views differ.

HardOCP is very harsh on the fx5700/5950... pointing out that poor trilinear is forced regardless of what settings you use.
Toms is less harsh but still pretty damning.
All that extra Mhz and cooling for what?
techreport is probably the kindest on the FX5700. even recommending it... sorta.

Overall though it doesnt look good.

[H] really hates the Trillinear issue.... NOW! They initally said, 'Is it a big dea?', 'well we didn't notice it while playing'. Then they came out with that scathing article/op-ed pieces about nV and it's drivers and fan loyalty, and now they are harsh about trilinear ever since that piece.
I like the site, but I don't think Kyle's got the vision. The site is a great source of info and links, but the opinions are a little cotton candy like. They look big and tasty, but after you absorb it your realize it was mostly fluff and air. I go to [H] for the raw data/links, however their standards aren't up to the rest of the Great reviewers. That being said there's alot of info that can be pulled from the reviews if you're willing to overlook some of the commentary. But isn't that the way it is for most of the sites that cater to everyone?

I like theTechReport as a site, but a few things caught my eye in that review. The ShadeMark not much of a change, so not revolutionary like we were meant to beleive. It looks like they got the partial precision to work without IQ hits, which really, if it looks as good as the ATI's (which most reviews are showing) then it's a risky strategy that might be showing some returns. The GunMetal benchmark seems interesting that large a jump between the FX5600 and FX5700, is it the additional vertex power? It's a big gap, and it isn't likely to be driver floptimizations due to them both using the same drivers.

You're right that views differ, even benchmark results differ from site to site. I think I'm beginning to appreciate THG's idea that +/- 5% makes them equal. When compared from site to site if you added up the differences between reviews you'd probably come up with the conclusion that often they trade scores in the same benchmark depending on setup.

Same here. The R9600P will do me for now. Although the AIW is tempting.

While they know how to make extensive reviewing, am I the only one who really can't bother to read those badly designed graphics?
Seriously, the colored bars are fine to distinguish, but their association method which leaves you checking the color codes below the graphs truly hinder any potential to me. I just gave up really. And I'm not much of a fan of seeing "super-hyper-mini-scroll-bars" like these. Pages could help.

In anycase, I checked the images and such. I see Digit-Life as potential.
But if you love it that way, I'm cool with that!

Time to go back to FutureShop and screw with their warranty system.

Yeah, I agree with you there. You definitely need 32bit colour to read those (but I only have 256 colours! ).

So the Teal line with the vertical slashes is the FX5700 and the Aqua Line with the right slanted diagonal stripes is the R9600XT, and the Turquoise line with with the left slanted hashmarks is the R9600Pro. Wait which way did those stripes tilt again?

Yeah, I've always hated THAT aspect but the meat is the good stuff, the graphs are usually not something I focus on (especially since they have the actual figures as well) so much as the chip/memory pics and the IQ stuff.

I have to disagree about the pages, I like one be Page, I can bounce back and forth to compare results very quickly. But that's a personal preference (which I mentioned when I posted the link to their R9600XT review).

I just find they have good info, even if it's not presented as cleanly as some (who sometimes dress up no info to make it look worthwhile reading).

HeHe! Do you think If I bought an R9600P now, waited long enough, 're-created' a major issue I could get an RV380 as a replacement in 4-6 mths?

[sorry folks a little divergence, read if you like a good annoying salesperson story]

I gotta tell you about a friend's experience with FS while buying a digi-cam recently(at the NE store, not where my one aquaintance works, but near where this friend lives). They were trying to push the extended warranty on him just as I sauntered over with my copy of the Matrix Reloaded (love the addition of the Will Farrell bit), then he turned to me and asked me what I thought.
I said, for $300, it's not worth about $70 for 3 years coverage, when Pentax is giving him 1 year depot service (there's a depot in calgary so no worries about mailing it), by the time it fails that $70 would help you get a 6 megapixel replacement.
Then the sales-guy says 'well since we have a 30 day guarantee you could take it, and if you decide you don't want it you could come back and return the extended warranty.
To which my friend said can I come back before 30 days if I do decide to get it after I look at the pamphlet?

To which the guy started trying to play hardball (I almost laughed outloud), Well sir no you must decide right now, and no, you only get the pamphlet if you sign at time of purchase we only give a copy to people who purchase the extended warranty protection (like they are state secrets or something).

At which point my frined asked to get it straight and the salesclerk repeated his sell again this time stressing that it's only availible if you buy it now and it will protect his camera better and they couldn't possibly let him come back later (after thinking about it of course) and then buy it (or he's more worried NOT buy it).

At this point I HAD to step in, cause I saw where this was going, and I felt my friend getting sucked into Extended warranty world (don't get me wrong it's good for things like Laptops [IBM lets you add each additional year as long as it before the end of the current year, and you don't pay more than if you bought it all at once, very cool]).

I said, so the 30 day warranty is for store credit or what?

He said no it's cash or Replacement no questions asked, thinking I was only talking about the warranty and that this would please my friend.

At which point I said, well you could always buy the camera NOW without the Extended warranty, and if you decide later to GET the extended warranty, you just return the Camera No Questions Asked, and then Take the Cash and Buy the Same Camera in a Brand New Box with Fresh Batteries and ALL WITH that Extended Warranty you couldn't decide on (now turning to the salesgy and saying), Right?

He looked suprised/pissed and hurt all at the same time, and said, well technically yes, but we don't like to do it that way (Yeah I bet you don't!).

But he could do that and then have time to think about then, right?

Yeah I guess.

To which my friend said (force the first time with confidence), Ok I'll wait then.

This sales guy just didn't get it that pushing the extended warranty (that corporate probably makes them push) almost cost him the sale. My friend later said he felt trapped and a little disoriented by jargon-ese until I showed up and then he felt very confident when I ssaid no, and then he was starting to get mad when the guy kept pushing, but felt relief when I basically deflated the guys bubble with that one suggestion.

Anywhoo, it was just another example of the CAR-Dealer vibe I get from too many of the people that work there.

It's like I almost hear them saying: 'Do you want undercoating on your new PC? Only $99 more and it protects against rust!'

Thankfully I can usually give them the 'NO, I know what I want, and it's not you bothering me' vibe within a few seconds after the 'Can I help you?' opener.

If you do work there next summer, try and keep a bit of your integrity lock away somewhere or they may try to rob you of it. :frown:

Man that was a long post (while I watch the Oilers lose to Colorado), I thought it would be a quick anecdote, but I guess that's just not my style.
