HeHe! Do you think If I bought an R9600P now, waited long enough, 're-created' a major issue I could get an RV380 as a replacement in 4-6 mths?
[sorry folks a little divergence, read if you like a good annoying salesperson story]
I gotta tell you about a friend's experience with FS while buying a digi-cam recently(at the NE store, not where my one aquaintance works, but near where this friend lives). They were trying to push the extended warranty on him just as I sauntered over with my copy of the Matrix Reloaded (love the addition of the Will Farrell bit), then he turned to me and asked me what I thought.
I said, for $300, it's not worth about $70 for 3 years coverage, when Pentax is giving him 1 year depot service (there's a depot in calgary so no worries about mailing it), by the time it fails that $70 would help you get a 6 megapixel replacement.
Then the sales-guy says 'well since we have a 30 day guarantee you could take it, and if you decide you don't want it you could come back and return the extended warranty.
To which my friend said can I come back before 30 days if I do decide to get it after I look at the pamphlet?
To which the guy started trying to play hardball (I almost laughed outloud), Well sir no you must decide right now, and no, you only get the pamphlet if you sign at time of purchase we only give a copy to people who purchase the extended warranty protection (like they are state secrets or something).
At which point my frined asked to get it straight and the salesclerk repeated his sell again this time stressing that it's only availible if you buy it now and it will protect his camera better and they couldn't possibly let him come back later (after thinking about it of course) and then buy it (or he's more worried NOT buy it).
At this point I HAD to step in, cause I saw where this was going, and I felt my friend getting sucked into Extended warranty world (don't get me wrong it's good for things like Laptops [IBM lets you add each additional year as long as it before the end of the current year, and you don't pay more than if you bought it all at once, very cool]).
I said, so the 30 day warranty is for store credit or what?
He said no it's cash or Replacement no questions asked, thinking I was only talking about the warranty and that this would please my friend.
At which point I said, well you could always buy the camera NOW without the Extended warranty, and if you decide later to GET the extended warranty, you just return the Camera No Questions Asked, and then Take the Cash and Buy the Same Camera in a Brand New Box with Fresh Batteries and ALL WITH that Extended Warranty you couldn't decide on (now turning to the salesgy and saying), Right?
He looked suprised/pissed and hurt all at the same time, and said, well technically yes, but we don't like to do it that way (Yeah I bet you don't!).
But he could do that and then have time to think about then, right?
Yeah I guess.
To which my friend said (force the first time with confidence), Ok I'll wait then.
This sales guy just didn't get it that pushing the extended warranty (that corporate probably makes them push) almost cost him the sale. My friend later said he felt trapped and a little disoriented by jargon-ese until I showed up and then he felt very confident when I ssaid no, and then he was starting to get mad when the guy kept pushing, but felt relief when I basically deflated the guys bubble with that one suggestion.
Anywhoo, it was just another example of the CAR-Dealer vibe I get from too many of the people that work there.
It's like I almost hear them saying: 'Do you want undercoating on your new PC? Only $99 more and it protects against rust!'
Thankfully I can usually give them the 'NO, I know what I want, and it's not you bothering me' vibe within a few seconds after the 'Can I help you?' opener.
If you do work there next summer, try and keep a bit of your integrity lock away somewhere or they may try to rob you of it. :frown:
Man that was a long post (while I watch the Oilers lose to Colorado), I thought it would be a quick anecdote, but I guess that's just not my style.
