It's not complete yet. Help us to complete and improve the chart.

The final version will be in HTML format, each card family will get seperate page. There will be also option for downloading the whole database in M$ Excel or OpenOffice.org Calc format

GW, toldya I would do it, & here it is! :tongue:

While maintaining this thing and keeping it current with the most up-to-date cards is the most important task, I will go back and slowly add-in all the major accelerator classes that existed probably all the way back to the old 3dfx Voodoo 1 & 2 cards. But I think y'all will probably agree that we should fill in the holes that exist now.

One thing that was unclear, was how many piplines the GeForce FX 5800/5900 had. I've seen anywhere from 8, (4 x 2), & even <b><font color=red>16</b></font color=red> which CAN'T be right.

Spitfire, you said you had a certain idea of having two type, one dividied into with several files with logical divisions in addition to the one file that will contain everything. As far as dividing the cards, we could do so by Chip company, or overall DirectX Generation. (If we did it by DX gen, I think it would be reasonable to have R200 cards with GeForce 3 & 4 cards even though the Radeons are DX8.1 while the GeForce cards are DX 8.0. If someone has a better idea for divisions, please post it here.

Radeon
Radeon 7500
Radeon 8500/8500LE/9000/9100/9200

Why have the Radeon 7500 separate from the Radeon 7000 & 7200 cards? They're essential the same technology at heart.

As far as I know

7000 doesn't have T&L Engine. 7200, AFAIK, is another name of Radeon DDR

7500 is Radeon 8500 without pixel/vertrex shaders, have Hyper-Z II instead of HyperZ

The only Radeons that didn't have a T&L engine were "SD-RAM" ones. Crashman will know. He even said that the origninal Radeon even had an early vertex shader or something like that (which I was surprised to hear but I would like some sources from him verifying this)

4 PIPELINES in the 5800/5900. 2 passes on each pipeline as opposed to 8 pipelines and one pass with ATI.

Okay thanx TKS, I'll go ahead and put in 4 pipes for 5600/5700/5800/59xx/ series in the doc.

Also, if one graphics card has a RAMDAC of 400 MHz within a graphics series, is it safe to assume that the whole series as 400 MHz RAMDAC? The reason why I ask is because I have alot of unknowns about RAMDACS and the vast majority of RAMDACS that <i>were</i> given were all exactly (2 x 400 MHz).

First of all congratulations, that is very interesting. I have a minor suggestion: instead of having characteristics on the rows and graphic cards on the columns, would be nice to have it the other way around, so anyone can use filters, order, etc. adding more power to the data.

If I'm not wrong, copying all the cells and then using "paste especial - transpose" on another sheet will do all the necessary work. Delete blank rows and you can do all selection and order you want.

BTW, I like to see that my good old GF3 (overclockable to Ti500 levels) was, and is, a very nice card for its time and age :smile: .

Sorry UFO, I know you have compiled most of the information (as the file says), but my congratulations are for ALL persons involved on that project. In any way was just for the one who was replying to.

I was thinking AIW series would be nice to be added. I know, it's easy to point the work to be done and hard to do it, but at least I contribute minimally to the project :wink:

A few things;

First where is the MATROX line?
If the Xabres are there why not them?

Also, the R9600SE should come before the R9600 on the list due to it's 64bit memory, most other cards progress based on performance, therefore the SE should be to the left of the R9600non-pro.

Also the AIW r9600 has 325mhz memory and should be slotted in between the R9600P and XT.

Here's a few other examples of the charts:

My personal favourite, but it's old (needs refresh);

<A HREF="http://www.tech-report.com/etc/comparo/graphics/" target="_new">http://www.tech-report.com/etc/comparo/graphics/</A>

One that was assisted by THGC forum members;

<A HREF="http://users.erols.com/chare/video.htm" target="_new">http://users.erols.com/chare/video.htm</A>

I don't remember if I already posted this for YOU or for someone else.

That should give you an idea of what's out there.

And see, THEY've got the Matrox cards. :tongue:

Okay, I'm gonna puke!

*pukes out major organs*

Okay, so someone else has compiled charts that are similar to the one I developed :frown: . Oh well, we'll just eventually include more stuff in ours :evil: ! Maybe our charts can also have explanations of what texel, gigapixel, bandwidth and other terms are to make the charts easier to read for a broader range of audiences.

Maybe we can also include other items not commonly found in other charts like the Date released, and special features, etc.

Oh and I have an entire notebook of charts from THG that I had to sift through to compile the one that I just made and the time to do so took up 2 days.

The second link posted by the TheGreatGrapeApe looks impressive. Should we stop working for our own chart?

OH UFO gets wasted by the second link :D

I thought about this last night i got a plan you know how in the hard disk forum there is 2 FAQ
one HD FAQ and one RAID faq. the graphic forum should be the same.
1. Graphics Card FAQ
general FAQ
buying guide
chart
some defination

2. Graphics Technology FAQ
in depth paragraph like GW's
technical info
techincal FAQ

The first one is the standard I've been posting here for a while (which someone here (DH?) pointed me to), and it was my sole standby for pointing out the specs, it's getting a little long in the tooth though.

I found another one (sorry to pile it on guys) from one of the other guys, Hiostu, who also came to the forum here to ask for our input a while back in <A HREF="http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=362242#362242" target="_new">THIS</A> thread..

Here's HIS completed list;

<A HREF="http://www.area3d.net/overview.php" target="_new">http://www.area3d.net/overview.php</A>

I'd say link to them all, why pick one?

If you wanna add one that's fine, just maybe a little extra work.

But NONE of them have the Matrox P650 or P750 listed so of course they are Incomplete! :wink:

COOL!

But there's still no P650 or P750! :wink:

That's a cool chart, but the breakdown of the specs is a little less elegant, but a nice pic and details. The chart is more of a timeline, and the info is contained in the links. But that's pretty sweet, gotta add it to my list.

Also I LOVED the fact that the NeoMagic chips are listed also, but who would ever use THOSE! :wink:
