Forum Cell Phones & Smartphones : Palmpilot hotsync over the internet?

Hey all!
While I am traveling, is it possible for me to hotsync my palm to my home pc
over the internet using my home pc's ip.
Also, if vpn is available, that would be even better.

I am using my tg50 along with my bluetooth v710 moto phone, which gets
me on the net just fine.

How can this, or can this be done?
thank you.

One of the issues you'd face is setting up your PC as a server. Might be
easier to do a Modem sync.

just cable net and cellphone.

Why do you want to Hotsync while traveling? If you want a reliable
backup, you might consider one of the apps that backs the contents of
your device to an SD card.

If you have a static IP or name, it's easy enough to do if your ISPs
don't block the port. Unfortunately I don't know which port that is,
but there are a number of tutorials out there for doing this. Easy
enough though is to change the settings for the hotsync manager on the
PC and on the PDA for network hotsyncing.

Sorry. Forgot.

If you are going to do this you need a permenant connection. If your
IP changes every so often then leave ICQ or whatever running, create
another account and add yourself as friend. That will allow you to see
your IP almost anywhere you can connect to the web. (I use Miranda-IM
off a USB stick for travel..)

For your router \ firewall then:

Try this port for HotSync?:

Palm Computing Network Hotsync
data synchronization ports: 14237 and 14238

If those don't work then run a firewall whilst you try and setup
HotSync and get the firewall to report the ports accessed..

Those are:

TCP: 14237
UDP: 14238

And whilst we are at it here is ping for palm:

That's exactly wrong -- it's the other way around:

TCP 0.0.0.0:14238 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
UDP 0.0.0.0:14237 *:*

Also, if you have PalmOS 5, don't bother opening UDP 14237 on any
firewall. The UDP wake-up is broken in PalmOS 5, and will only work if
you have a palindromical IP address like 192.0.0.192 or 10.1.1.10

Why not simply use the built-in ping?

Open prefs, go to network settings, choose "View Log".
Write "ping 12.345.67.89" and return.
