CPU Usage

Hi,

Can anyone shed some light on why the CPU Usage indicator in Task
Manager-Performance section shows a constant 100% when no applications
are being used? Is this normal?
I am running Norton Internet Security and Zone Alarm Pro Firewall but it
still shows 100% when I disable them.
The Task Manager-Processes section shows 39 processes running and I
notice the lsass.exe readings are constantly changing.
I have checked the computer for Sasser and associated viruses and the
virus scans show a clean bill of health. The computer seems to take
more time to react to key presses. I would expect this if the CPU is in
constant use but I would appreciate some advice on my next steps.

Press [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Delete] and look at the processes that take up the CPU
time other than IDLE (All the way at the bottom. If you can find it; that is
the villain. You may 'End' the process (right click) and see what the effect
is. This does not delete the file from your PC, for that you have to take
the next step............

Launch the Task Manager and go to the Process tab. Click twice on the
CPU column header to sort the list in descending order by CPU usage.

Post a list of the 4 or 5 processes with the highest CPU usage back
here if you need help identifying them.

Many thanks to Opa and Ron Martell for answering my query.
The CPU seems to be 100% engaged with cisvc.exe which belongs to the XP OS.
Is this a known problem?

Use Start - Run and enter SERVICES.MSC in the dialog box.

Locate the entry for "Indexing Service". Double click on the entry
and change the Startup type to Disabled.

Click on Apply and OK as needed to exit. Reboot the computer to put
the change into effect.

CISCV.EXE is related to the indexing service. This allows you to do
(fast?) full text searching on your files. If you don't use this feature,
you can disable it by rightclicking on the drive, selecting properties and
unchecking the Allows indexing service to index this disk for fast file
searching.
